Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

Thank you both for making great points, and that made my decision harderšŸ˜†. Iā€™m pretty sure 600s will match FR30 nicely. I may need to visit a Gryphon dealer nearby for an audition (which I have not done in years). Well, I have time.

8 straight losses! We are going to 11 and not in the cool Spinal Tap way!! I should have made the Bears lose every game bet after the Washington debacle!!! Probably would have paid for my Diablo 333.

The No. 534 amp is settling in nicely, and it arrived at just the right time. The 534 arrived just before I had to give back the borrowed PowerZone. The sonic benefits of the new amp helps to offset a letdown now that the PowerZone is gone.

Thanks to @weedeewop who was kind enough to let me borrow the PZ for a week, and for dropping off the PZ and picking up the PZ. It was good to expand the music I listen to and discuss audio stories, and have a good lunch from a nearby restaurant.

I enjoyed our time together. I like to think that there is more to this hobby than music and gear. a different paul is not all that different, a fine fellow indeed to welcome me into his home and share his musical passion through some extraordinary gear.
A special time I shall not forget.

Hopefully someone can compare the PZ to the AQ Niagara 5000.

As soon as I can get over to our local FedEx office to pick it up, Iā€™ll be upgrading my Stellar Gain Cell preamp to a new Stellar Gold preamp. It wonā€™t be mated with its partner DAC, however, since I just replaced my ailing Jr with a refurbed Mk1 a couple of weeks ago. But I fully expect the net change from both units will be worthwhile.

Keep in mind, I believe the first 12 watts of the 333 are in class A, then on higher demand, AB.

PS the first 6 watts of the Diablo are class A. In my mind this makes this component, the 300 or the 333, a wonderful buy on the used market. My only concern is where to get service.

You may be the only one that uses MU2 with D333, right? I probably asked you before, but do you prefer D333ā€™s pre over MU2ā€™s? Do you use MU2 analog outputs going into D333, and is there any issue doing this way on volume control?

Rune mentioned on a youtube video that the 300 operates in Class A for the first 5 watts and the 333 for the first 10.

With the volume control on the MU2, i have it set to be quiet when first turning on (-42) and for changing sources.

For listening, I keep the volume of the MU2 at 0. The volume on the Roon app is set to 92. They say to not set that higher.

The MU2 is extremely neutral sounding, so it is designed so that it can be used both as a preamp and with a preamp.

The magic that the PZ does puts it in a class by itself. The PZ is not a power conditioner, it is not a power regenerator, it is not active. It is described as a power optimizer.

The powerplants and the conditioner you mentioned have been compared, with the powerplants winning. The PZ improves what weā€™re hearing even more than the powerplants, but the cost is high, so Iā€™m keeping my powerplant. If I do get a powerzone, Iā€™m still keeping my powerplant, as the powerplants are still fantastic.

@dchang05 Notice how no-one is suggesting that you need to upgrade your excellent FR30 speakers?

I prefer using the 333 as preamp with the MU2 DAC and streaming; using analog output from MU2 into the 333. No problems experienced with volume control.

What models & comparisons are you referring to?

There is already an extensive thread regarding this:

Not a direct comparison, but the best I can offer. A friend had the Niagra 7000 on loan with a consideration for purchase with a Sim Audio based system. He borrowed my P15 for better than a week. The Niagra sounded a bit gray in the top end and slightly restricted in the dynamics; fortes didnā€™t fair well. The Niagra went back and he ultimately is running without any power treatment.

Moving on, I recently added the PowerZone 3.10. Having a P15, and a Puritan PSM 156. Going into it, after hearing the PZ at Axpona, my bias was and remains that the PZ betters both. The P15 and PSM 156 have since found new homes. The PZ offers the ability for all of my components to perform at their best with no editorializing. Surprisingly, my amps preferred to run straight into a 20 amp dedicated feed versus the P15.
For now the PZ stays, no regrets.
