Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, and I’m looking forward to hearing great things about PMG DAC! I could just replace Mk2 with PMGD too. Let’s see.

I’ve been looking around for an upgade to my PS Audio MKII DAC for quite awhile and just haven’t found one that sound more like music. I’ve decided to try the Playback designs MPD - Dream Dac. I just made the wire transfer to Mike at OCD.

The PS MKII is really good, especially after I put in the Muon Pro. It’s the least digital sounding of all the DAC’s I tried at it’s pricepoint. I heard the Playback Designs is also more natural and musical sounding than most other DAC’s. I will give a comparison to my PS Audio MKII DAC when the PD is delivered.

“Mike at OCD”. Should I (we) know who that is?

Here’s the Playback Designs Dream DAC at “OCD Mikey’s” site, but it’s in a bit of a different price class retailing for $26,000.

Isn’t that what Baldy ended up with?

Probably not. But I’ve heard nothing but good things about Playback Designs.

That is an end game DAC from its price alone, but I wonder how it compares to PMGD.

Everything’s relative… MSB’s new Sentinel DAC could be considered endgame at $375,000.

That is true, not that long ago PSA was the endgame for me.

If my wife found out I spent $37k let alone $375k on a Dac it would be endgame for me!

We second the wonderful effect of using a Muon Pro network filter!

As a matter of fact everything connected to the network switch improved, but the PS Audio MKII DAC improved the most.

I got over 30 hours on the Mun Pro with the PS Audio MKII DAC, and it’s still breaking in. When my system is really warmed up, the sound is so alive, dense, and musical, it’s hard to ask for anything more. Let’s see what the Playback Designs can add to it.

Didn’t you spend that on a CD transport?

With a DAC built in… in fact!

Mine lists for $39k maybe more now after tariffs but I did not pay anything near that. My wife has an idea of what I did pay and I’m pretty close to endgame now personal endgame as I’m going to be ended.:confounded_face:

Yes.! You are correct it’s a CD player! Lol

My endgame will be the final four. Final four No. 25’s that is! Hope I can keep that under $20k!

You will be pleased, it has made a most positive impression on me.

Picked up a set of these cheap bearing footers on Amazon

When I got the big SR glowing ground box, I didn’t have any rack space, so it sits on top of my pc’s monster LPS. These footers are adding a nice amount of extra detail & dynamics vs stock footers. Leading edges are more precise. They’re maybe a touch brighter than stock, but not lean by any means. I hadn’t tried bearing-based footers before, just Auva EQ, Herbie’s, IsoAcoustics, and spike solutions.

Naturally I’ve already gone down the rabbit hole of researching the best types of bearings, etc. I don’t know what these are other than just general “ceramic”, so I have some 6mm ceramic (si3n4) bearings that may or may not be higher precision coming to mess around with. Tungsten carbide was the other option, but I couldn’t cheaply source real tungsten carbide in the right size. I forgot how much fun these small cheap tweak experiments can be.
