I just read this book too. It was really good.
a message for all of our pursuits…audio and life
I’ve long been a fan of Tony’s novels. My wife & I have read everything he ever wrote, often more than once over the decades. His daughter Anne’s continuation of the series is also worth a read, especially her earlier ones. Her last two in the series haven’t really been to expected standards though IMO. Especially the last one “Shadow of the Solstice.” Her production involvement with the TV series “Dark Winds” seems to have changed her character development and writing, not for the better.
@pippen99 When I read Gorky Park by Martin Cruz Smith, I was hooked on his work. I hope his novels are enjoyed for generations.
Great book! I read it when it came out. I think you will really enjoy it!
About 2/3 of the way through this one. A virtuoso exercise in linguistic fluency describing the experiences of a young first generation Vietnamese immigrant working through personal failures and miserable working conditions after flunking out of college. In the midst of all, he’s caring for an old Lithuanian lady suffering from advancing dementia who serrendipitously talked him out a suicide attempt . He has an amazing way with descriptions of the small moments that define our memories of events and people.
After finishing the book, all I can say is don’t pick this if you want a “feel good” ending. Still a worthwhile read but it could have been improved with a bit more vigorous editing.
Just cracked open Christina Herriquez’ The Great Divide, a fictional account of the construction of the Panama Canal.
