Aspen bases

In a recent video of Paul’s, I and several others couldn’t help but notice that the right side FR 20 base seemed to have bent down, presumably due to the weight of the speaker. What happened here? Are the bases in these and the others, especially the heavy FR 30’s, properly engineered to support the weight? I personally would not be happy if I saw even the slightest flex under load if I owned them.

My experience is contrary to your perceived observation. I have tugged, pulled, rocked, and balanced the FR30 on its stand. I am not a structural engineer, but feel its load bearing and rigidity far exceeds the requirement. It has never shown wing deviation, or flex.
In short, it is rock solid, looks good, and has more than respectable feet.

I noticed that too in the video on youtube. I own a pair of the FR20, and no, that bottom plate cannot possibly bend from the weight of the speaker. They were most likely experimenting in order to get that bend in the base.

I have the FR30, with no evidence of bending or flexing to the base. Both appears and feels very well-built.

That one was a prototype. Not a final product. I’m sure @Chris_Brunhaver would have more insight than me

There’s a bit more of a story. Yes, they were prototypes but that one took a nearly 8’ fall off when a cable crimp on the lift for our measurement platform broke as I was lifting it up and I put a hand on the speaker and it didn’t fall off at impact. This bent the aluminum.

In general, I would recommend that you don’t drop the speakers from 8’ ft+ off the ground . otherwise, you should be good to go. :slight_smile:
