This new thread was spawned from the “Theoretica Applied Physics - BACCH” thread which now contains over 2600 posts covering a wide range of topics. The intent of this thread is comparatively specific - provide a vehicle for BACCH users to ask questions and share answers/experiences about BACCH usage. Unfortunately, traditional sources of information (manuals, AI bots, etc.) have been shown to be lacking if not outright wrong. Fortunately, we have some very BACCH-experienced forum members!
All BACCH products are fair game e.g., BACCH4Mac (B4M), BACCH-SP (dio and adio), optional modules (ORC, Head-Tracking, Active Crossover, Headphones, Stratos, etc.)
When posing your questions (or offering tips/tricks), please be specific about what platform you are working with.
BACCH products provide a unique and wonderful way to enjoy music but can be a bit daunting at first. Hopefully, this thread will help make that less so.
I got the first question. Edgar walked me through the first filter. I tried again after swapping to Diablo 300. Old filter still sounds good but figured I should do another. it did not sound good at all. The only diff I could see was the impulse response looked much messier. not sure if thats the issue, but gave up and moved on. I need to go back and try again, but wondering if others have had this happen. I think maybe I did not put mics in ears properly. I know he mentioned something about it matters.
When I make a filter I bury the mics in each ear. Edgar has told me this is wrong but I get very good results. The most critical thing when making a filter is making sure the volume is not too low or too high. On the left of the filter creation panel are three lights that tell you if the volume was too low or too high or just right. Pay attention to them. I also wrap the mic cord around my ear to eliminate any cord sound.
Your run looks pretty odd. I would give it another try. The bottom of the graph of your run is easily the worst I have ever seen. It’s a complete mess. Compare it to the graph at the bottom of the Edgar version. The Edgar version looks correct. Sadly, I can’t imagine what you did wrong to get what you got. Push those mics in a bit more, take a deep breath, make sure nobody is in the room and sit still.
Super basic question: am awaiting B4M but want to have cables ready before it gets here so asked AI to generate an image of possible connection scenario - I have the PMG 512 DAC, and wondering if optical or usb would be the only possible input… below is what was AI suggested - any insights would be helpful - mahalo in advance
You are limited to using USB from the Mac Mini UNLESS you use a matrix like device. The USB output from the Mac Mini is finer than frog fur. Worry about other things. The Babyface Pro is for inputs. (unless you want to use it’s internal DAC which you don’t)
The main purpose for the BabyFace Pro is to provide an input for the microphones you put in your ears to make filters. But you can also connect a phono Preamp, or a CD Transport, or a similar device.
Get a decent USB cable to go between the Mac Mini and the 512 DAC. Please don’t wish for i2s or things like that. Please.
Your streamer is no longer needed, unless that is storage for Music. Not sure why you have it on your diagram. Are you using Roon? Or is that how you stream from Innuos App to BACCH4Mac? I use roon so I could be missing something there.
I ended up putting my Roon Core on the M4 Macmini too. All in one box. NAS still has local library. Works fine. Nothing to babyface for me.
I use a Red Dawn USB cable. They were really only ones that I found reasonable price for USB C to USB B. Which the new macmini’s need. Unless you have older Macmini with USB A output. Then the world is open to choices.
Thanks for that - Yes, the Innuos was my intro to streaming and the HD has my music so wanted to play through B4M from there for now. I have never used Roon and want to be able to use Maestro if possible (if not will try roon) - I will eventualy migrate away from the Innuos to a NAS but have yet to purchase that hardware (easier if I buy and migrate prior to B4M setup?). Appreciate the good advice, I now think I will must start by running music via the MAC. Have yet to purchase the MAC Mini - am awaiting June (for the M5 chip announcement perhaps) if that doesn’t happen, will buy the M4 and whatever configuration is in stock.
Beyond Roon I am not sure how to get this to BACCH. I think some use optical to Babyface and such. I have tried Maestro, but gave up and really wont go back until the bugs are fixed and they go iOS. it may need a upnp bridge on the mac. not sure right now.
I am not sure if there are any Innuos BACCH users here. Wonder if you can just pop in the USB thing and it works. Edgar questions.
Yup - have sent many questions (Edgar is busy with his real job) but am really not going to be able to make headway until I have all the gear ready to go - and will likely need to at least start with roon core (will put that on Mac Mini following your lead) - am sure all will get sorted eventually… including Maestro.
thanks, just got 11 weeks of ROON for $1 - will try to sort everything out in terms of ROON prior to B4M arrival, purchase a USB C to USB B cable, a Mac Mini, eventually a NAS (i think synology) and just run ROON and B4M via my mac mini as has been suggested.
Have not given up on Maestro (paid annual), but it simply doesn’t work for my local library yet…so Roon it is.
and my Innuos Zen Mk3 will be my trade in when am ready for FR20s (or FR10s)…unless I can sell it to someone on Oahu sooner.
I purchased one of these. Plugged one end into my computer, and a Toslink cable into the BabyFace Pro. It worked swell. Normally I use a Matrix V3. This got sound from a USB output to the Toslink input on the BabyFace Pro. Music that traveled to it was clear and nice. And all that much better feeding to the B4M using the method described above. Is it Audiophile? Seems fine to my ears.
In the main BACCH thread, we discussed how to make a matched pair of BACCH and ORC filters. I found these official release notes with a manual starting on page 7:
However, nothing is stated on intializing the Stratos capabilities yet.
