Cabrera would be with the Detroit Red Sox. :).

He was OUT!! Great throw by willie.

So in 84 - which I call a 5 game sweep… I was in East Lansing at Michigan state. At a bar - which was closed except for regulars… all of us sitting at the barc… and you all know who went to MSU and left in 78 right? Kirk Gibson. You want to talk about going nuts when he ripped that shot to seal the deal. Free shooters all around. Wow. What a moment. Gibby was so money.

Dick Williams let Gossage talk him out of the intentional walk to Gibby. So classic :sunglasses:

In 85 me and my buddy went to the last game of the season at old tiger stadium. We got first row in the upper deck in right field. The overhang would put you almost on top of the right fielder. It was a contract year for Gibson - and every time he came out to take his position we would start wailing ā€˜Don’t leave Gibby!!!’ Finally in the 7th inning - he turns around and waives his glove at us to basically shut up. It was hilarious. He signed with the tigers again. You can thank us!

North Sider here. Yes indeed I’m ready for the crack of the bat. Can’t wait for the annual Red Line series next year when we host the Sox at Wrigley.
Go Cubs Go!

With the team we have assembled on the South Side this year I expect you won’t enjoy that series as much as you think you will, but we shall see. That’s why we play the games vs just plan them. JosĆ© Abreu remains the class act in the AL Central.

Omg. You guys have me excited for baseball. Some people don’t get it. I don’t get it. But there is something about that leather … the smell of the neats foot oil … the feel of the ball hitting the pocket of the glove … and walking from the alcoves of tiger stadium - almost ducking so your head doesn’t hit the ceiling … popping out around third base box seats … and seeing that beautiful diamond. Arggggh!!! That is life.

Others think it’s strange that I find the ā€œfasterā€ sports hockey football basketball, etc. boring and baseball not boring in the least. I say you either get it or you don’t.

ā€œThen one thing led to another and I’d discovered alcohol, gambling, dope,

Football, hockey, lacrosse, but what do you expect?

When you raise up a young boy’s hopes,

And then crush ā€˜em, like so many paper beer cups.

Year after year after year.

After year after year after year after year.ā€

I think you are correct.

I find all sports boring and of no interest. But I know a good number of bright interesting people (professional classical musicians, scientists, etc.) who adore baseball.

A friend of mine (who happens to also find sports uninteresting) describes baseball as a statistics engine. True, and I suspect this is part of the appeal.

Baseball is a game of strategy, more so I’d argue than any other major American professional team sport. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve encountered those new to baseball at Cubs games who are completely puzzled by an intentional walk (primarily foreign visitors for whom, say, soccer is king). Baseball is a game I maintain you have to grow up with to fully grasp the nuance of what goes on both on the diamond and in the dugout. That strategic element is what attracts fans like me, as a scientist by training and engineer by trade.

still, a quality system will also pick up the crowd…so, your stereo can also influence your enjoyment of the game…

Nicely explained.

I think the strategy is also often subtle, so that people like me who do not regularly watch the sport totally miss what is actually going on.

So odd I ran across this thread. As a kid I loved baseball cards and was into them between the years of 67/69. About 22 years ago I lost track of them and I talked to my dad back then and we figured he threw them out. My son was cleaning out my ex’s basement and… you guessed it. A Christmas miracle.

Nice! :sunglasses:

Great news! I see some '68s and '69s I remember from that time.

Yes. I collected from 67-70. I have over 2000 cards I have duplicates of many valuable cards. 3 Nolan Ryan rookies. 2 Johnny bench rookies. 7 hank Aaron’s. 2 Mickey mantles. Many Clemente. Multiple Kaline. It just goes on and on. Most of them look in spectacular shape. I’ve separated them in teams. I’m gonna get sleeves and create American / national league books. Plus I’ve got all of these decals that should have disentegrated but have not.

For now I’m going to enjoy and put them together.

Funny how the collecting window usually seems to be about 3 years for most of us, no matter the time period. My window was 1977-1980. Probably we discovered girls at that point and left the cards behind

As they called it in Scouts for those going for Eagle. The fumes. Gas fumes and perfumes. There was a negative correlation between getting a driver’s license and how close you were to Eagle Scout that oft determined your success.
