Beta Test Impressions for New Stellar Phono Preamp!

Is that a Fiio X5III in the middle?

IMHO, remarkable is an understatement.

Thanks. Yes, it hits way outside its class.

Fiio X7, using it as Tidal streamer, it has digital coaxial out into the DSD Sr.

I’m starting to be on Fremer side here claiming vinyl is better than digital. Comparing to digital (red book), even with the DSD Sr, I felt the sound is less open, less dynamic, less sparkle, what is going on here, is my digital not good enough?

Just picked up a Planar 10 myself, what were the cosmetic issues?

Got me thinking!

Last few years its been back and forth - vinyl overtakes digital in my system, then its digital for a while - back to vinyl now. Though actually both are quite good for different reasons. The key being finding a happy medium without going broke ; )

The goal is to avoid going broke? Crap.

Well redbook was always worse sounding than good vinyl playback imo. Even with the DS the loss in resolution, extension and ambiance is audible. With hires it’s different. The funny thing is that with the right vinyl setup, vinyl was also always more dynamic and powerful sounding (not related to compression used or not). Also always more open on top end as you say and with more shine and sparkle yes.

My DS is tuned and with this (not in its factory status) I must say it’s hard to reach or overcome its ambiance/holographic/transparency retrieval level for even really good vinyl. The rest so far stays as it always was for me. But digital has the unbeatable advantage of a bigger media repertoire and it never distorts. And: all that simultaneously reachable nowhere near the DS‘ price range for vinyl imo.

I understand the forth and back in each ones vinyl/digital history depending on varying gear used…what I fail a bit to understand is how someone who had access to top vinyl playback could prefer digital since 1980something for pure sound reasons…

The foam was dented in a bit, it seems someone stuck their thump nail on the side when packaging.

The funny thing is if we record vinyl, the play back through digital system is more vinyl like than the original digital source… I’m going to star recording my vinyl… but it’s just pita

Yeah sure…digital can record everything nearly perfectly. Strange somehow… music recorded and played back analog then recorded and played back digitally again. In the best case it sounds exactly like the analog playback.
Doesn’t mean we always prefer analog recording or playback.

I have worked very hard to get my Digital side as close to my Analog side as I can. It is very close, but Analog still wins. With my Turntable/cartridge/phono preamp setup I am constantly surprised by how little vinyl noise I get. Clicks and pops are rare. I also have to give credit to my Audio Desk Systeme Record cleaner.
I use the Nuwave phono converter to make 24/96 recordings of my LPs and then I compare the digital to the analog. It is close, but not there.

i am very intrigued by this thing. It’s pricey ($4000 last I checked), so I’m not sure I could justify it at this point. If i had a larger record collection, though, I probably could.

I find it lives up to the hype…

Built my own Arduino based RPM measuring device:

This is similar to the no longer made Phoenix Roadrunner, just heck of a lot cheaper ($40)

Rega is running a bit fast, but this is without the drag effect of the stylus… so my guess it’s pretty close to 33 1/3. Will measure with stylus when I get the Planar 10 back from Rega (They’re replacing it for me to correct the dent in the foam).

As for sound, happy to report that I’m pretty happy with the Rega + SPP pairing. Missing my vinyl listening already.

Does anybody know what’s more exact, the gyroscope function of the smartphone used by appropriate apps (I have the RPM pro) or a stroboscopic disc?

When I compare they differ roughly by 0,1 RPM at 33,33333

Depends on the quality of the print and strobe, I would trust the strobe. I didn’t want to to deal with staring moving bars, digital rpm print out is so much better.

My LG and iPhone differ so much by as much as 0.3 rpm. I would say iPhone is more accurate compare to my Arduino, which I made sure to use the 2ppm TCXO to measure time.

When I Installed Windom on my DAC Jr last October I had felt that perhaps digital playback was ruling over Vinyl with the PS phono converter. I have had my Spp now for about a month and just last night felt it’s awesomeness with the slam it punched the mid bass. I am running a modest front end. VPI prime scout with the Mofi mm Mastertracker for cart. I was spinning Heart’s Dreamboat Annie for my son and cranked it to show off and Holly Sh!t…with the spp gain on low and 47 ohm the BHK pre at 56 volume …the sound was incredible. So clean and clear without the digital edge.
Vinyl now rules my system for sure.

just arrived SPP, the best part receiving a new piece of equipment. When I get it up and running, will post impressions which I know is already been done compared to my Manley chinook. In this thread
