Beta Test Impressions for New Stellar Phono Preamp!

There shouldn’t be any inherent hum. What gain level do you have the phono set to? I wonder if it’s amplifying some RF from an outside source.

I have had light hum on my BHK Pre from all sources. I had it when I used a Shunyata conditioner, and I still have it with a P12. However, I can completely eliminate it by completely dimming the display on the BHK Pre.

I just installed a new cart on my VPI prime scout. Went from a MM Mofi mastertracker to a MC Donatello Gold. These are the only two carts I have experienced. The Gold having retail of about 2x the cost. Lucky enough to come to one on sale. The set up and compliance virtually the same as the Mm. Donatello states loading at 470 ohms. To me the 200 ohm setting on the Spp remote sounds best. Surprised me how variable load setting has a substantial influence on the nuances of the overall sound. I also got another reminder to use the mute even when removing an Lp from the platter. Especially with new age vinyl. The static snap was loud enough to send the BHK 250 into shutdown mode. I should probably try and ground the platter first. Can’t be good for the cart getting a snap like that. I did have a hum on the Spp due to an extra ground I had on the TT from the wall outlet dedicated circ. Removed that and grounded from Spp to TT. All good.
Oh and by the way my new cart is freaking awesome. There is no way now that my DMP CD player and DAC Jr can catch up. The Analog was slightly ahead before with the MM cart. But now there is no chance. Good golly what a process just to figure this out. If I knew this when i first started 10 years ago. Toss the polycarbonate discs. I just need a descent server.

It’s set to MC low Gain. I spent some time today trying to isolate further. No combination of changes seemed to matter until I dropped the IFI Phono 3 from the office in place. The hum was reduced to practically nil. I had to turn the volume up to 80 to hear it.

I also tried to A/B the balanced and single ended outputs. The balanced outputs clearly have a higher noise floor / more hiss, even after adjusting the single ended up too many dBs.

I’m beginning to wonder if I have a dud SPP. I’m still waiting for a call back or email from support; it’s getting close to a week now.

Is it possible to share where you acquired your Donatello Gold MC? I have a VPI Classic 1 with Dynavector 20x2, considering a cartridge alternative. Thanks.

Weird, I wouldn’t expect the balanced to be producing more noise. The guys are in the shop now, so feel free to give them a buzz. Also, TJ is a great guy to email and you can reach him at tjt@psaudio.com

@audiophilehi @amgradmd @dawkinsj or other folks here… Did you have the opportunity to compare, after so long time, the SPP vs Gold Note PH-10 with PSU-10?

@luca.pelliccioli I have not had the opportunity to compare the SPP vs Gold Note PH-10 with PSU-10. I am very happy with my Gold Note PH-10 with PSU-10 and at the moment don’t have the itch to upgrade.

Same here I am happy with the Gold Note and don’t use the TT enough to want to explore other options.
