Bridge 2 + Roon timeline?

It blows my mind that a company is providing a free upgrade to an existing product line and people are complaining that they are not releasing it fast enough. Take a chill pill and appreciate what you’ve got, people. Jeez.

Thanks, Paul, for all the wonderful updates to improve the DS DAC. I’m looking forward to Roon through the Bridge II and am very excited that you are implementing this feature.

EldRick said Actually, DS owners got to Beta-Test Torreys first and voluntarily report bugs to PS Audio to correct issues with their software, thus, to some extent, doing their job for them.
All software releases from every company involve beta testers. The difference here is that PS Audio has the balls to do it publicly and allows anyone to be a beta tester, without limitation. Most of us appreciate both the opportunity to be involved on the ground level, and to offer our requests for fixes, improvements, and opinions on sound.

If this bothers you, do not participate and do not read the beta threads. I happen to enjoy reading the beta threads even if I do not own the product or use it in a way others do - the excitement, dedication, the incredibly excellent ears of our fellow members, and willingness to help others are all a delight to witness.

Sorry that your mind is blown, I bet that hurts.

While I fully agree that Paul runs a wonderful company with an open door policy, we are reacting to the timeline Paul gave us for this upgrade to the Bridge II some time ago. Don’t tell us to take a “chill pill” just because you are happy to wait. Paul and company have done a great job at communicating their upgrade deliveries and perhaps we’ve become a tad spoiled. This one in particular is sensitive because we know the Bridge code is there for us early DS DAC (and Roon) adopters but they are sitting on it until the Jr code is beta tested. We didn’t know this was part of the deal prior.

I’m happy to wait for the upgrade while I sit here on this sunny beach in Cozumel for the next 10 days. I know many of my fellow DS DAC owners are chomping at the bit.

+1 to what Elk said. In addition, the testing that PSA does through the forum benefits both the company and us users, since bugs get found and fixed more quickly. No company, no matter how devoted to insect control, can test every combination of hardware and software that’s out in the world. The more the merrier in this undertaking!

Just a "tad" spoiled? :)

You have been around long enough to also know Paul gets a tad excited announcing new products and features, and consequently can be optimistic as to a delivery date.

And, again, Roon is only an interface. Nothing is holding you back from fully enjoying every recording now. Is not the music more important? Revel in your favorite recordings, beautifully portrayed by the DS, and enjoy the anticipation of a new toy in the offing.

Think about it, IT’s FREE.
Wrong, Polyanna. The retail price of your DirectStream firmware subscription is $6000. It comes with a black box in which to run the code.

PS Audio continues to produce these updates to improve their product in order to sell more DACs. Period. Once you upgrade the code for new boxes, you might as well put it into the existing boxes for negligible cost, so the reputation continues to spread and people buy more PS Audio DACs.

Nothing is “FREE”. Sorry, but there is no philanthropy involved - only good business.

Yes, Paul spoils us with riches of great tech. Don’t tell me how to enjoy my music! Any current Bridge II interface is so inferior to what Roon offers that it does effect my enjoyment. I hope you realize this is all tongue in cheek however. Don’t feel the need to over-police the forum. You’ve been here long enough as well.

I’m done rattling the cage for a while. I love all my PS Audio gear!

Well… Going from OS 1.21 to Torrey’s final on my DS is like a three to four thousand dollar upgrade to my ears, and quite honestly…probably more. Color me pleased with my PS Audio investment into state of the art digital playback.Of course…ymmv.

No one has told you how to enjoy your music. I only suggested you concentrate on the music more, focus less on the equipment. Your choice.

Huh?

I have merely expressed my disagreement with your position. Everyone is entitled to do so. Even me.

A sad, cynical position.

PS Audio is not Apple or Bose, both of which deserve such ostracism.

You will find Paul loves what he does and, from the decisions he has made, it is apparent he is more interested in producing good audio than making money. He is additionally both highly ethical and exceedingly generous. I am certain he is delighted he can also feed himself engaging in a passion. There are many, many easier ways to make money than in high-end audio.

Paul’s (and Ted’s) enthusiasm and customer-centered approach is why many of us are here.

We don’t mean to make this hard or frustrating...

Sorry to say it, but IMHO this is frustrating for the DS Sr. owners, as it is a year-old vs. month-old product.

Let me see what we can do. It isn’t that simple (is it ever?). Maybe we can come up with a way to release Bridge code now.

I could be wrong but it would appear at least for the Jr that there might not be a way back from a bridge software update - unless there is a way to override the network install with a USB file being present. As its such a new product for me I have never done a bridge update (nor anyone else I assume)

I’m about to go and load up Torrey’s on my Jr now…wish me luck.

I'd like to know about this too.
frank7036 said [irrelevant nested quotes deleted] I don't have Roon or Bridge(1 or 2) on my DS but I do have Torreys and now don't have access to 1/3 of my music which is DSD on USB because Torrey's hangs when playing via JRiver. I'd very much appreciate that being sorted out before all the effort to get a new product implemented.
Frank, have you tried the Torreys B beta? I am in boat similar to yours (no Bridge or Roon, but Torreys Final crashes when driven by my MBP running JRiver). Torreys B works well in my setup and sounds sensational.

Guys, don’t forget that the Roon implementation is an extra service. It is not like one have payed for something and not received the goods. I understand the impatience, but I suggest we give PS Audio some slack…

Hi Bootzilla,

No I haven’t tried Torrey’sB yet. You had mentioned it in a previous comment and I thank you for that. I had hoped that the guru’s would have had a fix by now but I guess I’ll have to try it. I am always appreciative of what PS Audio is doing regarding the software updates - it is one of the great aspects of the philosophy of the company. However, at the moment there does appear to be a focus on getting new(er) products and all the updates for those to the market as a priority. I want to be assured that the consumers that have already committed to the company & products and that are not early adopters of the bells and whistles of new-ish technology are not left behind. PS Audio is a strong company with excellent technical and pragmatic personnel. I think that the odd comment to remind the powers-to-be that there are still issues in the “boot-and-braces” community is not an issue. PS Audio is better than that.

Frank, please feel free to express your concerns and wants. PS Audio does pay attention and I have never seen them offended by a customer request.

Completely agreed.

Has anyone with Roon installed, tried the Roon ready update to the Bridge 2? I’m thinking of trying Roon, again, if it really works with Roon. With the new update , JRMC21 network streaming to the bridge is working great for the first time, so I’m hoping Roon works as well.

Maybe slightly OT but for those who are using the Bryston BDP 1 & 2 with their DS, there is a RoonReady firmware update available which allows ROON to feed to the DS Dac. Just did it yesterday and now see what all the fuss around ROON is about. Fantastic user experience coupled with stunning sound quality.

I have not yet had time to do any SQ comparisons between using ROON or the MPD interface on the BDP but I am inclined to not care. The Discovery feature in ROON had me exploring lost crannies of my music collection last night. The ability to go off on listening tangents is most appealing to my nature.

If any BDP and DS owners have not given this a try, I heartily recommend it. Bryston has also thrown in a 60 day free trial coupon.

Regards,

Chris
