CD / SACD storage

A greater number than my entire CD library

For me, the CD acquisitions have been a matter of supporting the performers, by purchasing product directly from them. Many of them are rather obscure, so I am reluctant to give them up.

A single Can-am drawer will probably hold close to 300 CDs in jewel cases, so a 1,000 CDs in rice paper sleeves should be no problem at all. Considering how well they are made and how long I have owned them, it may be one of the most cost effective purchases in audio I ever made.

I had books with vinyl sleeves for a while, years ago. Store the jewel cases or display em? i like displaying stuff, I guess.

1300 CDs, all alphabetical by artist. Too many genre-crossing groups, so I don’t bother with any sub-divisions.

Like Garcia-Grisman. Bluegrass? Folk? Americana? Old Time? Blues? Jazz?

My understanding as well from the summary on Can-am’s website.

Can-Am cabinets are available in two, three or four drawer units. Each drawe r holds 270 CDs, 120 DVD movies or 150 Blu-ray movies in standard packaging. Each drawer will also accommodate 540 discs in slimline cases or 1,000 discs in sleeves. Can-Am cabinets are stackable and come fully assembled.

With my Magical CD player I am so pleased I never sold or de-jewel boxed them.

Yes, I too am addicted to my disc playback’s sound and am a disc only guy.

Sold your turntable, or just moth balled it. IIRC you hada Rega at one time.

I have yet to sell any CDs, or LPs for that matter. Duplicates tend to be given to friends that are simpatico to my listening preferences. However, as I am running out of storage space out of necessity I am contemplating consolidation of some sort. I am loathe to actually doing it after my ripping experience, preferring to listen to music.

I still have and use my Rega RP3 with all the Groovetracer mods and TTPSU etc. and use it in conjunction with my NPC and DSD Mk II. I consider LPs to be discs as opposed to digital files or streams. I listened to a mono Ellington LP (disc) this morning.

Thanks for the clarification, for a moment I thought you’d given up on vinyl.

I’ll always listen to vinyl going forward, but honestly it’s about five percent or less of my disc spinning. I just have so much more I want to hear available on silver discs.

I worked eight to ten hours a day for four and a half months ripping my collection back in 2006 using EAC. Since then I changed to dBPoweramp, a much better application. Now I usually open a new CD, Scan all the art and disc, both sides, and RIP it to AIFF files. I publish all this on a website for my own amusement.

I am behind of course, but being retired helps. I scan the art, then do cleanup edits with Photoshop. I am way, way, way behind doing my vinyl. But I now have a seriously expensive Scanner that an LP fits properly on so one scan instead of multiple parts that I have to put together. It’s a labor of love, I know I have thousands and thousand of hours invested into it. I try to share my art on Discogs and Musicbrainz so when I am gone some of my efforts will live on. I really enjoy the process. Of course I am listening to music the entire time I do this work…

Kindly, Al you are one of a kind in a special way. My CD rips were using an Apple platform and iTunes, which was no pleasure at all.

dBPoweramp is fully automated. Metadata, artwork, AccurateRip, everything needed. Put a CD in the drawer and it all gets done easy.

I also use DBPoweramp. Easy process. The worst decision I made was getting rid of ally CDs 6 years ago. Now I get to rebuild the library

I used to file mine by lots of different genres (including special “audiophile” sections), but decided it was too much work. So now I fit everything into SACD Classical, SACD Non-Classical, Classical, Non-Classical, Soundtracks/Casts, or Holiday. Within each section they’re alphabetized. For classical, it’s composer/performer; for non-classical it’s performer/album title.

I have lots of trouble trying to add Classical to my database. I have to file things under Composer, Artist, Conductor, Orchestra, and probably five other things. One title can cause a whole bunch of new people to show up in the bar to the left on my webpage. In contrast, the Beatles are always just The Beatles.

Oh yeah, and classical song titles can go over 256 characters which is just gross!
