Gosh that really is a labour of love ![]()
Some of the entries are sad, not much art, not much info. But all the new stuff gets the full treatment. During the Winter months I update the sad stuff. I will never be caught up.
(I am all caught up with the artist: āGoat Girlā)
I have a lot of respect for the commitment of so many of you to preservation of CDs and LPs. Ever since I started buying records in the 1960s, Iāve been seduced by the magic of extracting beautiful music from spinning discs, both large and small. As Iāve gotten older and technology has expanded my options, though, Iāve been able to focus on streaming the music without holding a physical disc in my hands. Itās been liberating! I havenāt sold or trashed any of my CDs or LPs, but Iām not buying new ones or ripping music from old ones any more. Using Qobuz and the Innuos Sense app, Iām listening to new music and creating playlists that bring me more joy than working to add physical discs to my collection. And Iāve been able to carve out more time for writing, rather than cataloging more CDs, now that Iām retired.
Having celebrated my 73rd birthday yesterday, Iām realizing that I donāt have unlimited time to do the things I love to do and to love the people who matter most to me. Ripping CDs is not one of my favorite things, so Iām not planning to do much of that in the future. However, I can understand how other music lovers can enjoy the act of organizing and preserving the musical treasures that have added so much joy to their lives. Enjoy whatever makes you happy!
dBPoweramp makes ripping so much easier, and the SQ is as good as the original CDs. Therefore, I only keep the disc and printings in five Amazon 400 binders (my wife loves it), and seldom take CD from them. Darn, I need to get another one soon!
Until I get an Ethos, I will play very few CDs in future. I only keep SACDs and rare CDs on the shelf and they fill up quick too. PST is mainly for playing SACDs and burned DVD files nowadays.
Belated Happy Birthday!!
I missed your cake, where was it? Enjoy your 73rd!
Al & Donald,
Thanks for the birthday wishes!
I am 67 and I want at least 67 more birthdays. Now that I have this nice stereo.
Send me your want list, and if it falls within my dupes, Iād be happy to send some your way.
Sounds as though I need to investigate dBPowerAmp further. At this time I rip direct to one of two INNuos Zen/ZENiths I have. Whoa, one is full, the second will be shortly. Still like the idea of dBPowerAmp, anything but iTunes.
I rip everything to my desktop system. After getting all the meta data up to my personal standards, which are absurdly high, I then copy the files to my NAS which currently has 8TB of the available 41.9TB (RAID 6) in use. Then I copy the files to a couple of external drives, one of which I take up to my lake home so if everything turns to goo in one location, the other is hopefully safe. The other I leave unplugged in a fireproof safe. I do not wish to do all this over.
Then there is the story of a guy who threw away a hard drive with his initial Bitcoin investment on it. The hard drive is now worth BILLIONS and the county refuses his efforts to search for it. He has offered half to them, they arenāt interested. Fun
South Wales, heās been at the council for some time nowā¦
Meanwhile, for completeness, Ripping on Linux here with a utility called āabcdeā - command line, it uses ācdparanoiaā for the ripping, and is configurable to use one or more sources like MusicBrainz etc for info.
Doesnāt get artwork, but easy enough to drop a cover art file or files from the internet in the folder afterwards.
Happy birthday, enjoy your time, listening to music and doing whatever makes you happy! During playback, having closed my eyes, there is no time, space, age, past or future, consciousness⦠just dreams floating around an infinite pleasant instant of fugace lightness.
Hic et nunc (yes @vkennedy61 , this is for you again).
Sic semper erat, et sic semper erit.
One of my favorites.
