Celebrity audiophiles

It is telling the bulk of the examples are 40 or more years old.

Keith Jarrett

The original pressing of Cat Scratch Fever before Nugent did his cover?

…interesting…so one more of those crazy audiophiles/musicians preferring analog…evil guy.

But we at least know one or two audiophiles here with the extreme opposite opinion.

============================

“Since the inception of digital, I have been disappointed with every single piano recording I’ve ever made, with the exception of two or three, and I’m now able to describe accurately to Manfred what I hear that I don’t like.

Like most audiophiles, full or part time, Jarrett is not a great fan of digital sound:

“I recall, in 1981, when digital was getting started, Manfred and I were in the studio in Stuttgart recording a solo piano thing to digital and analog both—same mikes, same feed, only the recording devices were different. We listened to them A-B, A-B, A-B, and I said, ‘Man, uhhhhhhhh.’ He said, ‘I like how quiet it is on the digital version.’ And I said, ‘Well, yeah, but it isn’t that quiet in the studio.’

“How realistic is that? What you got was blackness in the background, but it was synthetic blackness to me. I was hearing it as an absence, like a vacuum cleaner came in after every note and went ‘schlurrrp.’

“Analog LPs just sound better. If you want to know the position of instruments, if you want a soundstage of any kind, and if you don’t want a shimmer music doesn’t really have—I don’t even know how to describe it—If you’re not listening to a record, you’re not getting the whole thing. They’re just more natural.””

Well that was Keith Jarrett years back. More strides in Digital since my DACs before the DS fail to provide studio ambiance and spatial cues and so does the DS before many streaming tweaks to lower noise floor wit LPS, upgraded transformers, better digital and analog cables.

Well 2011, no digital stone age.

But independent of his digital/analog opinion, he would have deserved to be recorded even better. Not many ECM are really high quality level in recording imo, rarely magic. But that’s ECM’s house sound…regardless of its valid quality level, it’s a little flat in all regards, no matter if from the analog or digital era.

But there are some great recordings in either era from them. The later analog ones and digital ones here and there. Jarrett might have liked better if they recorded in DSD. But who does this AND edit analog. That’s a niche of a niche.

If you’ve been to RMAF the last few years, you’ve probably seen David Robinson there. Being 7’1" he’s hard to miss. He’s a super nice guy and indeed owns a few PS Audio pieces.

Yep, ran into him in the Von Schweikert / VAC room at RMAF. I took an empty chair right in front of him, on the belief that his ears would still be sitting a foot or two above my head. :joy:

Looks like a number of stars in front of ‘a stereo’ but not necessarily audiophiles.

Also, I feel like maybe I should start smoking again.

Especially practice to unpack and flip records with a cigarette in one hand.

Looks like a B&W speaker on the left and a McIntosh piece on the right? Keener eyes probably recognize the turntable.
