Biogas

There are two new biogas plants on the way in Sønderborg Municipality. The construction of a plant in Glansager has started in 2019 and a plant at Kværs is planned. Nature Energy is building the two plants and investing a total of DKK 500 million. The plants can displace 60,000 tonnes of CO2 each year and an important contribution to making the Sønderborg area CO2 neutral. 60 local farmers have entered into a contract to supply manure and bedding to the plants.

BIOGAS - WHY

In the 1980s, Danish society invested DKK 55 billion. DKK in a natural gas network, which each year provides a societal benefit of 2 billion. Green gas must secure the grid in the future. Gas can be stored and we can use the energy when sun and wind do not strike. At the same time, the production of biogas is a good utilization of a waste product from agriculture. By degassing the manure, methane is not released into the atmosphere. Gas can also be used in trucks and buses and contribute to the green conversion of heavy transport.

BIOGAS - WHAT IS IT?

Biogas is extracted from manure, bedding and other biomaterial as well as from food waste. It is pumped into an oxygen-free tank, where bacteria eat the material and emit gas. It is converted to natural gas and sent out on the grid. The farmers get the degassed manure back. It does not smell and has a higher nutritional value than pure manure.

THE ROLE OF FARMERS
The farmers deliver manure to the plant and get degassed manure returned. It is a circular economy where everything from the animals’ faeces is utilized. The energy turns into biogas and the rest turns into fertilizer. Manure contains, among other things, phosphorus, which is one of the planet’s limited resources. The local farmers form the cooperative BioenergiSyd AMBA, which enters into a contract with Nature Energy to supply manure and bedding for the plant in Glansager and in Kværs.

Our municipality’s goal - CO₂-neutral in 2029

The goal is by 2029 to make the Sønderborg area a CO₂-neutral growth area.
The effort involves both the citizens, the municipality and the business community.
The area’s own renewable energy sources must also be at stake. Green district heating, heat pumps, biogas plants, wind turbines, energy-efficient renovation and electric cars have been identified as some of the key focus areas for the coming years.

There are two sub-goals in the vision:

In 2015, CO emissions will be reduced by 25% compared to 2007.
By 2020, it should be reduced by 50%.
As a company, Sønderborg Municipality must be a frontrunner to achieve the goals in the vision. Against this background, the City Council in Energy Policy 2008 decided that the municipality should prepare CO₂ and energy accounts for the municipality as a company, in order to get an overview of energy consumption and the derived CO₂ emissions.

(Population for the area about 80,000 people)
