Different speaker cable length

@Paul is of the opinion that different speaker cable lengths for relatively short lengths is ok. I have a 5 meter length to left side 1.5-2 meter on right side. I’ve been of the opinion of synergy. What are other people’s thoughts? Planning on upgrading to SilTech 680L cables and a shorter right side will save $. Things that make you go ?

I would ask the manufacturer of the cable. 3.5 meters seems quite a difference. I would guess that your amplifier specs like output impedance should be considered.

My amplifier is located not midway between my speakers, but on the left side, so I potentially understand where you’re coming from. If you already had one cable shorter than the other, I would try and see how it goes, but specifically ordering new cables of different lengths is something I wouldn’t do.

I’ll start with my audio shop, FidelisAV in NH. They’ve been my shop for decades. Good minds abound. I’ve never done different lengths, but I’ve never had this level of resolving equipment before. PMG digital front end, ARC LS-2 S-200 Acora MRC-3 and Siltech 680 loom soon to be completed. I have time to decide. The speaker cable upgrade will happen once the electronics have burned in completely. Thank for the advice to All.

@RonP since we’re the only 2 that responded, I think he means us, lol.

Go get your speaker cables in equal length. Should you ever want to upgrade SC in future, no one is going to buy your uneven length of cables (unless you are extremely lucky, but you will sell much cheaper too).

Very good point.

I was going to say the same thing about resale value and even returns of uneven lengths. Keep that in mind. Though my rack location is off to the side also (temporarily while the man-cave is under construction), I went with 3m pairs and made it work. Used a desktop headphone hanger attached to a rack shelve to coil up the excess on one side. Nothing lays on the floor.

Signal propagation thru copper is 98-99% the speed of light (~300,000,000 m/s) so IMO your only concern is potential resale value.

Consider also that the construction of your cables impacts their intrinsic capacitance and inductance, both of which modify frequency response. If they’re of different lengths, the filter effect of each will be different, as well as the magnitude of the signal reaching your speakers due to differing resistance. Whether that makes an audible difference is something only you can determine by careful listening, and maybe not even then.

I avoid the issue by always buying matched-length pairs of analog signal cables, just to be safe. Your choice and mileage might vary.

Now a thank you to all for the help again. :winking_face_with_tongue:

The $ saved isn’t worth the “what about “. Equal length it is.

You chose wisely, Grasshopper.

Good choice! Always equal length on all left/right cables.
