DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

I noticed another operational quirk. When you have the display dimmed you can only turn it on by the remote the bluepower button on the mk2 will not turn it on. On all my other pieces like the PST or PWT pushing the button will bring it on. My firmware version is 2.3.0 and FPGS 173

Did you try the menu button or the scroll buttons? I just checked and all of them woke my display.

No I did not but that is good to know. I still think for uniformity the blue power button should also do that.

Agreed. Button actions should be as similar as possible within a vendors products.

In Roon, the MKI shows as an Audio Device, but thereā€™s not a selection for the MKII.

Will PSA be requesting Roon to update their device library?

Ok, happily listening all evening to sacdā€™s and cdā€™s via PST. All via is2. On track 15 of Fleetwood Macā€™s ā€œThe Danceā€ playback suddenly stopped. Cannot get any sound from PST. pST is responsiveā€¦I.e. can select different tracks, but it will not advance the time on any track. Maybe communication issue on is2?

Just waited a few mins and switched cds. Now playing perfectly. Will continue to monitor

My original DSD Jr. bridge stopped working, so I bought another Jr. I stream music 24/7 to my Jr. Many times when I power up my Amp no sound is delivered from the DAC to the amp. Through trial and error I discovered the solution was to grab the volume knob on the Jr. and twist it up. The music magically appears. I have to do this half the time I power up the amp. I believe there is an issue somewhere in the software that may be the cause if this.

My thought is there may be something similar going on with the MK2. So I would like to suggest to those encountering the music stopping issue to try raising the volume level on the MK2 and see if the music comes back.

Itā€™s a shot in the dark but its easy enough to try.

Volume already set to 100 on MK2, so must be something else in my case

Upon further investigation I believe the mk2 is interpreting the other buttons as just an input signal. It only temporarily takes the unit from dim mode. It reverts back in a couple of seconds. The only way to come out of that mode is by using the on button on the remote. This will not be the case once the ui code has been corrected to recognize the standby button for that purpose.

Are most folks setting the MK2 output @ 100 when using a pre?

I was setting at 75 when the music stopped yesterday, and 82 when the music stopped today. I will move the volume higher see what happen should it stop next time.

Oh! I see what you are after. Yup, agreed and confirmed.

All day today at 100. I thought I would start adjusting the volume after a few days of run in. I am sure what I am hearing today will be different tomorrow.

Its not about where the volume is, its about changing it. In your case you could turn it down and then back up.

@ted - after 10.5 hours of streaming via Roon on i2S 1, music stopped playing.

Symptom: Roon attempts to play a recording for a few seconds and then skips on to the next song in the queue.

Unplugging the DAC didnā€™t work by itself. I also had to unplug the Signature Rendu SE.

Once both were briefly power cycled I was able to resume playback.

It may be because there is too much negative talk behind the DS MK1. My DS is getting psychological support, she says, ā€œTed couldnā€™t have said that about me.ā€

One for the longer list after the more pressing things, but if the colour of the displays is being looked at, Iā€™d certainly like to see the same approach across the BHK Pre, DS2 and AirLens.

It looked like from Paulā€™s video the other day that the AirLens might go ā€œredā€ in standby? Perhaps it too can go ā€œblueā€ when on and have no illumination when off?

Interesting finding this morning. Fired up everything this morning and right out of the gate there was no sound from any input. I powered everything down again including unplugging my source (streamer). Turned everything back on and sound was back. Exactly 30 minutes later lost sound. Almost like itā€™s on a timer. Every time now itā€™s 30 minutes and poof gone.

I have had the same trouble with my Pink Faun 2.16x Ultra. Once in a while (usually after a power outage FWIW) Roon will either keep skipping forward on the playlist without actually playing anything or it will show the song playing but no sound comes from the DAC.
Sometimes its a Roon error where the endpoint is muted in Roon and sometimes itā€™s an unknown network problem that the PF has to be restarted in order to make music again.
I believe it has something to do with the network handshaking (for lack of a better term).
Good luck sorting this digital demon out.
