DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

Same here in Oregon.

… on the seventh day you will rest … we here in Italy are still confused on which day exactly is the seventh maybe! It depends on soccer/football games calendar and if you are in politics. Not to mention what happens during the entire month of August!

Edit: Self sarcastic post.

I finally got hold of an inexpensive infrared thermometer. I checked the temperature of the various panels of my mk2 the front 96.2 the left side 101.8 the right side 96.9 the back 108.8 the bottom 116.9 all temps are in fahrenheight . For comparison the front of the P-15 is 94.6 the BHK preamp is 90.8 the PST 87.6. It seems to me the mk2 is running warmer than it should. My room temp is 66.

I have to note that it is functioning properly. I have not had any music stops. It has been running continuously since it arrived here,

I put our MKII in our four bay console this morning. It’s closed on the front, the rear is open and there’s an exhaust fan (AC Infinity) in one of the adjoining bays. I just checked the temp again with our Fluke. The ambient air in the console is measuring 80F. I think I’ll add another fan to pull cool air in from the bottom of the rack. The current fan is set to exhaust.

Top: 96.5F
Front: 94.0F
Left: 96.0F
Right: 92.0F

I am retesting all of the inputs to the MKII. In doing so, I removed the KTE SU-2 from doing USB to I2S conversion. I reported two weeks ago that I could not pass DSD to the MKII via USB out of the Sonore Signature Rendu SE. Today, with a full power down of the MKII and the Rendu, I am passing DSD64 and DSD128. DSD256 doesn’t work, but that’s a known bug. I have no idea why DSD over USB is working today. I am positive that I did several power cycles when I first starting using the MKII. I even tried alternating which unit was powered up first (the MKII or the Rendu). Today it doesn’t seem to matter which I power up first, DSD works. I am certain this will make @brian.fitterman happy.

My path for i2S:
Roon Nucleus Plus → Ethernet → Ubiquity Unifi managed switch → Fiber → Ubiquity Unifi managed switch → Fiber → Sonore Signature Rendu SE → USB → Kitsune KTE SU-2 DDC → i2S → DS MKII i2S input 1.

My path for USB:
Roon Nucleus Plus → Ethernet → Ubiquity Unifi managed switch → Fiber → Ubiquity Unifi managed switch → Fiber → Sonore Signature Rendu SE → USB → DS MKII USB input.

I haven’t had time today to sit and critically listen to the MKII playing DSD over USB. However, I am listening to it casually as I write this and it sounds good. I’ll have to A/B USB/I2S now that I have unscrewed whatever I did two weeks ago.

Edit: I’ve been emailing back and forth with Jesus Rodriguez about this change in events. One caveat to this now working, is that DSD is working by setting the Rendu to DoP but not when set to Native DSD. He’s going to poke at that and see why that’s not working. Using I2S via the KTE SU-2, I was using Native DSD.

I am going to let the infrared thermometer stabilize over night and recheck temps tomorrow. Than I will compare to what I got on the first try. If there is a difference I will repost.

The infra thermometer is handy to have. I have been known to use it when grilling and smoking.

I just bought a cheap one off ebay. I wanted a way to compare what I feel with my hands to what can be measured. I have no idea how accurate this thing actually is. I at least can compare the temps of my various components for a gauge.

@vkennedy61 oh now I have to get one.

Point it at ice or boiling water.

…or your tongue…

I don’t think many CDs ever got preemphasis.
Must go way back in the digital standard-setting world - you can set it as a flag in an SPDIF data stream, some DACs even respond to it and apply the deemphasis

It was also part of standards for FM radio TX - and (of course) the USA had different preemphasis standard to Europe (and Japan I think) so if you had an FM tuner set for the wrong continent you’re FM sounded sibilant, or dull, dependent on which way round it was wrong…
<geek mode off>

Today after letting the new thermometer stabilize to room temperature over night i did multiple readings and am getting consistent results.
P 15 90.6 f
250 96.2 f
Pre 83.8 f
PST 78.8 f
mk 2 front 88.1 f
mk2 right 88.1 f
mk2 left 93.7 f
mk2 top 85.2 f
mk2 back 105.2 f
mk2 Botm 106.5

I believe the earlier measurements were off as I just received the thermometer and it had not stabilized to room temperature yet. Readings are still warmer than some other components but not as threatening. Still breaking in and running well without any loss of audio or other strange behaviors.

I don’t see a tongue measurement :stuck_out_tongue:

Most (or all) laser temp guns rely on emissivity or the surfaces ability to reflect heat as a basis for the measurement accuracy. Most of the cheaper models use some fixed number based on who know what. The higher priced models have emissivity adjustments that allow accurate measurement regardless of surface color.

Not that it matters a lot but is something to consider if absolute accuracy is needed. A white or light colored surface that is say 100f will measure a different temp. than a black surface at the same temperature without the compensation being made FYI.

I dont remember the testing standard for consumer electronics. Maybe 70C (158f) or 80C (176f)?

The automotive bits that we work on are tested in a 105C (221f) atmospheric chamber.

I’ll apologize in advance for the long post. I ended up shipping back my MKII on Friday, which PSA hopefully will receive on Monday. They requested it be returned due to the resolution drops I started experiencing. However, prior to boxing it up I started experiencing additional problems, so I decided to keep the MKII over the holiday to better assess the new issues. I was strictly using the USB input. What follows is part of an email I sent to PSA which describes the additional symptoms I encountered.

I was listening to the MKII on the 22nd when out of the blue the power shut down on the unit. I tried for over an hour to get the MKII powered back on, but with no success. I tried changing the fuse, but no luck, and then I tried plugging it into a different part of the house, but still it would’t power up. It was completely dead. After roughly two hours the MKII powered back up on its own. It seemed to be functioning fine for a while, but then output in the right channel dropped to an almost muted level, while the left remained unaffected and was outputting fine. The output in the right channel returned after about 30 seconds and then shortly after the Left channel did the same as the right. It too dropped to an almost muted level. Again after about 30-60 seconds both channels were outputting equally again. At this point I decided to connect the MKII to my other audio system so that I could rule out all other components, cables, and even the circuit going to that particular room. After the MKII had been running in my other system for a good while the power once again shut down without warning. At this time I also noticed that the RCA connectors plugged into the back were VERY hot. So hot in fact that I was concerned about the cables possibly being damaged by the heat. The RCA’s on my DSJ always ran pretty warm, but this was way beyond that. Up to this point the RCA connectors on the interconnects plugged into the MKII had been cool in comparison to my DSJ, so something had definitely changed. The rest of the MKII seemed warmer than usual, but not hot. Only on the backside was it hot. When the MKII finally powered back on, which was after about an hour this time, I continued to play music. And once again I got the same channel dropouts as before, and in the exact same sequence. The right dropped to almost mute and then the left did. I then decided to reinsert the MKII back into the first system, knowing now that the cause couldn’t possibly be related to anything in the system. Then for the next roughly 24 hours I didn’t notice any issues other than the one that I originally reported, which was the resolution drops. It seemed to be running ok, and that was the state it was in when I disconnected and boxed it up.

I honestly don’t know what to make of these latest findings. From what I understand, the resolution drops that I originally reported was believed to be related to the desoldering job, which would require a relatively simple fix. But these new issues have me wondering how they could be related to the original problem, or if there is possibly multiple issues going on. Maybe I received an anomalous unit. I guess that is better left for the technicians to determine, as I am certainly no expert in such matters.

Sorry to hear all the problems you have been having. I hope they get it resolved and back to you so you can enjoy the magic.

I wouldn’t use it anymore…could be a fire hazard in the making!

Yes, the sound from the MKII is magical indeed. As good as the DSJ sounds it is hard going back to it, but hopefully not for long. I’m confident things will be sorted out.

All these volume issue reports are concerning especially for those that don’t have preamp. Could this instead of reduced volume the MK2 max it out instead? That could be a very bad day, and could result in speakers damage or worse.

@tedsmith or @Paul what are your thoughts on this concern? Or we shouldn’t be too concern at all because of some built-in protection?
