DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

Thanks Paul for this insight. Yes I understand pick and place and solder reflow, makes sense.

My does the same thing. Left channel mute and right channel down about 30db. Doesn’t affect SACD’s though.

Same here via DMP. That is odd. Happens on streaming via i2s and on a CD playing on the DMP via the other i2s, but not an SACD. I’ll resist the temptation to ask what the heck pre-emphasis is about or why there is a menu item for turning it on and off. Realize it was discussed earlier, but it didn’t stick in my brain as anything I care about. :man_shrugging:t2:

No testing today. Out of the blue my phone died. No warning. I spent the entire day dealing with with it. I am super annoyed.

Hate when that happens. Makes you realize that the new definition of WW3 will be about paralyzing our handheld communication devices and the Internet.

I’ve been listening the the MKII for over a week now and the best way I can describe the sound over the MKI is the MKII has better musicality. By being more musical, I mean it is more emotionally involving. The air around the instruments seems more real. The presence and liveness of the images are enhanced over the MKI. You just hear more of what’s in the recording. Every day, it just seem the get better and better! Still no problem with any muting or freeze ups.

Thank you for that. I makes me feel better about not having to ship my unit back.

Sorry to hear about your phone issues. One of the other testers tried the pre emphasis on his unit and it behaved the same as my unit. Ted also mentioned that it looks like a UI bug.

They have never used pre-emphasis with SACD only used on a very limited number of CD’s.

I know what you mean. I do not have a smartphone, but when my laptop stops working it drives me nuts. It is ridiculous that we have become so super dependent on these things that when they breakdown we are so impacted.

Technology: we lived better when we lived worst!

I feel you @vkennedy61. I had exactly the same experience last weekend. I was on the road far away from home and suddenly my phone died. Because here in Switzerland, stores are closed on Sunday, I was for a while without phone. And getting back all the logins, two-factor authentication etc was really painful.

People will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.

De-emphasis only matters when you happen to come across a cd that was set up to use it begins to play and you experience the screeching highs that the 10db boost the applied for the sake of noise reduction reaches your ears. It is allot like a fixed version of dolby noise reduction.

This captures, to a great extent, the dynamics of all abusive relationships.

Interesting. Can’t say I’ve ever experienced that, in 30-something years of discs. But I don’t play them much anymore.

It’s my opinion that the fall of western civilization began when stores began to open on Sundays.

I am so glad the stores closed on thanksgiving. That was getting a bit obnoxious.

Move to NJ. They still are closed there on Sunday’s. They also have no self serve at the pumps.

When I was traveling in New Zealand back in the 80’s, everything was closed on Sundays, and I mean everything. Even on Saturdays many things were closed. If you died during the weekend, you’d have to lie there until the coroner showed up on Monday.
