DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

I’ll admit to embracing a fairly wide swath of Marg ingredients over the years. Somehow, it is like at times loving a Punk Band and others not settling for anything less than the Best Symphony Orchestra on Earth. Context is key.

But recently read a review of this Target Marg Mix. Still needs good tequila and GOOD FRESH limes and so on, but, hey.

The Beta test thread has resulted in extremely useful results, and the latest FW made MK2 sound spectacular in my view. :wine_glass: Time to chill!

No one has suggested otherwise.

Relax! I do value your opinion but you are a more serious person than me for sure.

Lagavulin is my house whisky as well. However, I’m savoring an Ardbeg Uigeadail at the moment while enjoying my DirectStream Sr MKI and waiting for you beta testers to chase the bugs out. Cheers!

Two points for what it’s worth.

IMO There is a difference between tweaking and reporting what you hear vs. speculating or asking about mods. I’d rather anything about mods (including whether to talk about mods) should be on one of the DS or DS Mk II mod threads. Reporting what you hear in your system with any given tweaks is on point.

IMO Either both achohol and mods can be here or they both can’t. Trying to say that one can and the other can’t seems…

You of course get that I agree. With the caveat that alcohol can sorta be ok in a thread briefly on a friday night, if it doesn’t also involve reporting impressions of the sound or functionality of the beta unit under test.

They tweaked and modified Beta to deliver it. They already declared Beta finished with release od mountain top software. So why are you gent’s sweating a beta being botched. This thread could be closed if the Beta is over PSa already got what they wanted from us.

This would be an overstatement from my perspective but, on balance, I feel like the kit is just now ready for some thorough Beta Testing. However, I am not privy to PSAs processes or goals and objectives for Beta Testing the MKII.

I hope I am mistaken, but I fully expect some significant hardware and software issues to persist over the near term based on the information I have come across following this thread.

Time will tell…

How is 179 FW treating you? Have you experienced any SQ change over two days? Or was it three days?

I have not played it yet today while listening. I let you know in about 30 minutes. Been prepping horse ranch for a 100 plus holiday party. I am ready for wine and song though.

100 plus? Gee, I cannot even handle 20 guests now. Let me know what you think after your hard work. I dunno, every night it sounded a bit different, but I am listening to some new CDs from Japan so maybe it’s the CD, or maybe it’s the red wine.

Well the manual lacks details on table of content features like ground lift and I angered forum members for exposing it using shorting plugs. To me it was just testing the features. Yes it will sound better if and when it works having shorted them. You think one would like to know. Or that everything is warm and thick with a stock fuse .

Think I crapped in their corn flakes from the reactions.

Well, I’m not a beta tester, but this thread was one hell of a read. I got behind in reading from the start and my attempt to catch up made my head spin and I had to stop several times to let the mush in my brain reform. I would come back the next day or two and find several hundred more posts, Oy! At least it appears the major issues have been resolved. Ted is an absolute saint for his patience and ability to answer sometimes garbled questions. What a guy! I suggest he spend the holidays somewhere where there is no internet access …

As for the path forward …

Not to pee in the pool, but this wouldn’t be the first time the move to production has been a little premature. The DMP being the prime example. Not trying to dis PS Audio, but these things happen, and they do their best to correct it. I do not envy them.

LOL. Agree 100%.

I found an appropriate song regarding this Beta and the flak being spewed.

179 is still killing it even with cold amps

Sing it Frank!

It’s been said before but is worth repeating. Beta tests are supposed to find problems. Therefore, a beta test that finds problems and gets them fixed isn’t botched. It’s a success.

Ted is a saint and a saver! I had FW179 installed for three nights and tonight it has reached its peak because I cannot imagine it will get better! You installed it a bit later than me, and I hope you will experience what I have now.

Sharp, clean, detailed, smooth and full is how I describe a nice old wine, not to an audio gear because they just do not mix. But that is exactly how l will describe the latest 179 FW in MK2. I mentioned yesterday I want to replace Purple fuse with stock fuse because, until yesterday, smoothness has not fully developed yet. So, I thought the culprit could be the fuse. NO! I now know Purple adds a spark into the smoothy (Well, I have not listened to any Sax yet, I do not want to be looking for what your heard :astonished:).

Or could it be just the effect from the old wine? Darn I hope not, I cannot afford to drink it every night.

I agree. Fantastic that the gremlins have been found, fixed and it seems we’re good to go for the general release!

Very much looking forward to having the DS2 in the house and hearing what all the beta testers have been raving about

Huh?
