DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

How’s her sponge painting these days?

Here you go Beef

See post ^^^^^^

I thought about that just from the beta tester protocol flak churning here. But I tweaked mine to as I plan to use it. As such i found it to suit my needs and far exceeds a DS DAC that was tweaked.

Thanks. I would disagree with Paul’s view on that. The fact that most cannot hear theirs, or that you have to get your ear within inches, would indicate that being able to hear it from 7’ away is not normal. And that’s not acceptable.

What does this mean? Thanks.

I Know my system very well and I can hear the combined sound of all the transformers in the system. The mk 2 is not as loud as the PST mechanical noise is when playing an SACD which spins at a much faster rate than a redbook CD. I noticed the new addition to the system when there were pauses between tracks. I can tell you my unit has been totally stable and I am not considering returning it. In fact my original Diresctstream was delivered to PS Audio a couple of days ago.I do believe that the concerns I do still have will be addressed in a new improved UI firmware. I lived through the DMP nightmare which is one piece that never made it to full 100% operation. The mk 2 lives in service of the music and that it does very well!

Nope. Golden Artist Colors.

I am no longer aware of that noise as everything must have settled in once the unit came up to temperature.

I was astonished when I read it, but obviously he’d know and nobody seemed to disagree. My daughter’s $19 echo dot doesn’t hum, and streams music.

When I read the comment my first thought was, yikes, well this is exactly why we need people comparing this to something, anything, other than another PSA product if that statement from Paul combined with the same or similar from Ted (I think Ted said 2-3’) is true.

At any rate it raises the issue why do some and not others?

We actually did get her sorted away. Was doing pours over various sponge shapes.

For the record, I have a second-hand DMP and it has performed flawlessly and sounds wonderful. Best disc spinner I have owned to date.

I know it had its problems, but I understand PSA moved on because of the unfortunate “vaporization” of the drive availability it was built around as much as anything else.

As far as I know my experience is far from unusual.

Regards.

That’s interesting. Might be good for future readers to have that quote appended up with the original posts so they can know to ignore the subsequent controversy.

I bet it still does not support 5.1 audio and the cover art though stored on the SD card requires the internet connection to bring up the cover art, unlike the PWT which will display it from the SD card without connection. Mine would lock up occasionally too. I was involved with sending keystrokes info to Barry to help him duplicate issue. I never regretted sending in my DMP in trade toward the PST when it became available. I had always regretted trading in my PWT. I was lucky enough to locate a pristine PWT ant a great price and I still use it along with the PST.

I phrased MK2 a lot about the sound quality, but if I heard any hum within a couple of feet that would bother me. I would have posted it for sure. I know I am one of the thirty or so posted often here. I will try to post less. A lot of my earlier posts had to do with problems with the unit, and SQ inconsistancy after it came back. So, it is not all phrases.

Understood.

I have no interest in 5.1 audio and have not “enjoyed” the issues you had to deal with.

Knock on wood.

Regards.

PS

I have thought about grabbing another PWT (I had one once upon a time), but its CD only and I have a burgeoning collection of SACDs.

My DMP has patiently been awaiting trade in on the DS2 for a while now. The irony isn’t lost on me.

Vince,

Thank you very much for this post. I was a beta tester for the DMP. As such, I completely agree with you about having a product ready to go in all respects before releasing it for general sale.

I also worry about consistency; I know that many of the DMPs worked fine, but mine was never among them. Now we hear that some of the Mk IIs work perfectly while others have issues, with no explanation offered from PSA.

I also find it surprising and somewhat troubling that so few beta testers out of 100 have posted any findings here.

I’m eager to upgrade to the Mk II but think I will hold off for a few months to see how things shake out.

I sympathize with this concern, as my previous posts have indicated.

I really hope there are answers to the material questions and fixes for the operational problems before the production run is cranked up.

That said, it appears to me PSA is still gathering and analyzing data from this exercise.

I received one of the second wave MK II, Build #151383. I have approx 22 hrs in so far with Firmware 2.3.0 #173. I did not install #178, but I installed on 12/14/22 Firmware #179. The most striking audible difference was the warmer more analogue sound, essentially little or no glare. There was no issue in the firmware update. See my post #1349 for additional details in my setup. The DS MK II has brought my system into a new level.
