DirectStream DAC MKII Released

You’re right. What an amazing time and yes! I am more involved than ever.

My mk2 is still running warmer than my BHK preamp but not as warm as yesterday. I put my hands on the sides of it to compare the two. Sonicly it is magical. Voices seem so much more real and everything is placed more solidly within the soundstage. This is music! I am still concerned about the operating temperature as everyone else seems to have cooler operating units.

I’ll check out how warm my unit gets when I get it. Both my DS MKI and PST runs not too warm. I’d wouldn’t worry about how warm it get unless it’s hot to the touch. I would sacrifice a little added heat for SQ.

Fed Ex musta heard me cursing them because now the unit is out for delivery. Great!

I agree. I’d like the volume display to match the BHK’s in size like the Mark I did. Better yet put the display on the remote.

But now it matches the Perfectwave SACD transport, which is a boon for many.

Surely the PST doesn’t have a volume display. A BHK Pre does have a volume display (which is slightly smaller than the Mk 1 DS I think but significantly larger than the Mk 2).

Regarding Ken_Eis suggestion about putting the volume on the display that would be no good to me as i control three DSs from one remote - I guess if the remote could send the actual volume to the dac rather than an up or down (or initial press) that’d work for me.

EDIT - displaying the volume on the remote’s display wouldn’t work for me and I can’t see how it would be accurate (remember, I’m controlling three dacs with one remote - I can see the numbers on a Mk 1 and if I see that a volume change hasn’t been actioned by all three (because I was sloppy with pointing at the dacs) I just get up off my seat and go and use the front panel (i.e. touchscreen in a mk 1) to adjust things so that all dacs are the same. I actually only ever use one input so all the work done on the Mk 2 input isolation isn’t as useful to me as others).

Well, yes sure. But the display windows, the whole front face, is identical, which is a plus for me and I’m sure others. The “whiteness” of the image seems to be the same as well from photos. That symmetry is pleasing in my Samson rack. And I confess I don’t change volume often (do that with the preamp) and can likely see the numbers on the screen where I sit (about 8’ away).

Wow, it seems that the final price is now available in Italy for the MK 2.
12.000,00 euros.
As usual a big difference compared to US price.
No mention about trad in offers.
Not happy.

That’s ridiculous, I’d anticipate £8000 here (but exchange rates are worsening for the UK).

It can’t be.
I’m guessing some typo mistake.

This is the gross importer prices. Dealers surely have some discounts on these prices, that they consequently apply on final offers to their customers, as always on the market. The final “street price” might attest at 9k euros then.

Now that’s what I would call…

Maybe you can do a MK2 specific read out through your powerplant and compare this with PSA and forum members? Hopefully this will help to clear matters.

2 posts were merged into an existing topic: DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

The power level with the mk2 vs the original Directstream has not changed. It was worth taking a look at though.

My Beta unit has arrived and I am installing it. I will post my findings in the Beat Testers thread. I hope everyone waiting on their units get them soon.

It’s here!!! FedEx usually makes me wait until the end of the day, so Happy Dance! Letting it come to room temp, then the fun begins.

We would not be concerned about how warm the mk2 runs except for the fact that Ted said it should be running very cool. What also increases my concern is they had to remove multiple surface mount components to eliminate the the noise that they were causing. That operation presents an opportunity for some solder to go somewhere it is not supposed to be. Hopefully that is not the case.

Just received my Mk2  can’t wait to hear it when i get home!

I was concerned about heat because originally we only had one failing unit and it ran hot. Not just warm, but hot. If multiple units ran hot that could have been a problem, but so far that hasn’t been the case.

Removing the attenuators would only affect the audio output and almost any soldering failure would affect the audio output, most likely leaving the two channels with unbalanced levels.
