Directstream Junior

Looked through the Forum for anything on Future Feature Requests, I couldn’t find any so thought I’d plop one here in the DirectStream Junior thread being the feature is for the Junior. If I’m in the wrong place please let me know.

As a future feature it would be really good if there was a way via the Remote to call up the current Track info. Currently you display the Track Name, Album and Artist when a new track starts. It would be helpful if there was a button I could hit on the remote and recall that information. Even more helpful would be if I could hit a remote button on get the track format/resolution information being received by the Jr (e.g. PCM 24 Bit 96 Mhz). This would help me a lot when it comes to debugging/verifying my streaming source (e.g. Roon).

What buttons would you suggest?

Dennis

I thought Peter (above) had a great idea, reuse the ‘Source’ button. If you’re already on a source (e.g. Bridge) and hit it again then the first time hit it provides the album, track & artist. Hit is a second time and it provides the sample rate received (e.g. 24 bits x 96 Mhz). Hit it a 3rd time and it goes back to volume. Don’t hit it and after X seconds it reverts back to volume.

If you don’t think the ‘Source’ button works then basically the same steps but on a button that PS Audio believes is best.

That sounds good to me. I will look into it. The Album & artist information is only available on the bridge, so on any other source it only show sample rate information.

Dennis

I was primarily wanting the sample rate/format, but thought “while you’re at it…”. So if you guys could provide that in an upcoming release that would be super. However as a Bridge user I’ll take bothkiss

I’m looking into it for the next update.

Dennis

Cool!

My preference would be for the display to stay in the state you select rather than returning to the volume by default though.

I have also added a setup menu option called MenuView. You can select between volume, sample rate as your default display screen, and if you are on the bridge the bridge track information too.

Nice work Dennis!

If you’re ever in need of a beta tester I’m happy to oblige : )

I think one of the most cost effective things you can do for your audio system is to get dedicated power lines with great grounding.

Please would you say a little more about what in your opinion constitutes great grounding?

I already have a spur from the breaker board dedicated to my audio equipment. I put it in myself using very heavy duty cable (thicker conductors than would normally be used to supply a cooker or electric shower). The earth conductor in that cable also is pretty thick. The breaker board was new in the past two years so the earth resistance was tested by an electrician and is within spec for a domestic installation.

Do you have an opinion or experience of making another connection to earth at the outlets next to the audio equipment. I was thinking of a thick earth (only) conductor from the back of the outlets directly to the ground outside. Unlike the earth at the breaker board it wouldn’t be shared by other electrical equipment in the house and wouldn’t run close to other domestic circuits.

Don’t change the grounding of your outlets, etc. without checking with a good local electrician (code varies a lot depending on local issues.) In particular having grounding in one part of your house hooked to a different earth ground than another part of your house is BAD! It will greatly increase the likelihood of evil things in the event of a nearby lightning strike…

I have two 12’ (or so) copper ground stakes both right outside my listening room and another set up at the main breaker box connected by 00 (or something) copper wire. The grounding wires from my dedicated outlets go directly to those local ground stakes and the big wire with no splices. To do that required that the connecting wires from those local outlets to the electrical box right outside my listening room be inside flexible metal conduit…

If you are lucky you might find a local electrician who doesn’t think you’re nuts doing dedicated circuits, etc. and understands what your goals are.

Thanks for the warning. If I decide to take the route of better earthing I’ll consult an electrician! (I know one who understands that audionuts have unusual needs.)
