Directstream Mk 2 observations

I think you’re ignoring literally everyone who has compared the mk2 to other DACs.

I enjoy reading them all, my criticism is only about Psaudio.

I’ve read your statement about 5 times now. You’re upset that PS Audio used the MK1 as a building block of how to make MK2 and then discontinued it after MK2 came out?

The way I see it, while a customer would love to have competitors always comparing and improving against other competitors, PS Audio takes the correct way at approaching product design. They find what they are doing well and continue to do that. They take feedback on what they are doing wrong and try to improve that. They compare with other products but focus on their strengths and not try to always one up the competition. It’s pretty poor taste to speak badly of your competition so really all PS Audio can do is compare the MK2 to the MK1 when it comes to public statements.

It’s really up to you to decide if mk2 is worth its weight. Everyone’s journey and preference is different. There are plenty of other companies out there that love to tout that their DAC is the best but generally that leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. I understand if someone doesn’t like the PS audio sound or doesn’t agree with their pricing. But from what I’ve seen, they’ve done a pretty good job offering benefits to their loyal customers and producing solid products.

If you have other issues, I’d like to hear it cause I don’t really know what the horror stories are but maybe this thread isn’t the best place for that.

Edit: In terms of mk2 observations, I’m still enjoying the DAC as I continue to burn it in each day. I haven’t really noticed any huge changes but maybe it’s cause I don’t find a ton of fault with it currently.

Mine just arrived. no ring at door, just left on door step. lucky I saw it. starting to rain. no bag on box. its supposed to start pouring here in CT soon too… come on Fedex.

Don’t take it personally. Some here are very thin-skinned any time a negative word about PSA is mentioned. But most are open minded. The forum is much better when honest opinions can be presented without everyone being so sensitive. Just because this is PSA forum doesn’t mean that everyone here must love everything about PSA (at least I’d hope not)

I don’t want to prolong the topic. I share the excitement and joy of MK2 owner friends. I have reservations about this that are not related to the performance of the dac. Otherwise, even the claim that the MK2 plays better than Bartok is not unbelievable considering the DS performance.
I hope you use it in healthy days.

It would good to understand the reasoning. It’s very easy to get caught up in emotions and make statements. Opinions can be weak or strong depending on the evidence.

Agreed, and I wasn’t referencing you per se. More commenting on responses I’ve seen lately to things posted and/or oversight thereof, but also don’t want to prolong or belabor.

It is pretty easy.

Constructive criticism is welcome, as are productive discussions of varying opinions.

Destructive criticism is not, particularly if continually repeated, arguing to argue, and/or all a given poster has to express.

We see more of the latter than we should, but this forum remains much better than most in this regard.

I agree with Elk: sometimes things go bad… But usually solved within a couples of days after some good nights sleep…

Excellent point.

It is wise to stop for a bit and think through how one wants to respond.

Is my post going to be more of the same poison, or am I adding something beneficial to the thread?

On a related note, I have been asked not to step in so quickly and give members an opportunity to resolve issues on their own. Sometimes this works, sometimes not.

Keep doing what you are doing. I find your forum management, and the occasional intervention, balanced and fair. There is plenty of room to play in this sandbox and fortunately it’s rare that someone takes a poop in it.

Back to original argument (if I can).

I’ve just read about another delay of the AirLens launch, can’t imagine how frustrating PS audio crew and Paul can be now. There is also a thread about a new Bridge Box coming (in march), to help owners upgrading to MK II without the AirLens.

The good news is how good the MK II is able to sound both from I2S and USB input.

I’m speculating by myself on possible scenarios now that the AirLens is (temporarily) no more an option. Personally I’m more than happy having to postpone upgrades on the ethernet/I2S path. The great work Ted has made on the MK II and inputs and settings sounds like a wonderful coincidence and his firmware upgrades are even more promising now.
I was hoping to sell the Matrix, now it is better to wait and see. I already bought an ethernet cable for the AirLens, now I’m going to test it in my actual PhoenixNET configuration for a while.

To be honest I feel I can be more relaxed if I stay as I am with my actual system. Watching the water flows from the dock for a while.
What? Am I saying this truly?

Curious to know your thoughts, guys.

Upgrade to MKII means I have to get a new streamer. I was hoping to get a good package price from my dealer in Norway on MKII + Airlense. The delay of the Airlense means I have to find another streamer or just postpone my upgrade. Hmmmm…

I think I lucked out because I have the DS Jr, so getting a separate streamer (Went with Sonore Signature Rendu). Now upgrading from Jr to MKII is a simple plug & play :star_struck:

Now I am in no hurry to be another Beta tester for AirLens, and I frankly doubt the Stylus OS can commute with it. I will wait to read reviews from the Beta test to work out the bugs before I commit to it if it brings major improvement.

You have a top-level streaming setup already, and I wonder if it makes any sense to add it to your system. My streamer/switch combo provides amazing performance from streaming, and they only cost a fraction of yours. So, I have more room to improve. But MK2 has made the future selection wide open because I2S is not a crucial factor. So even I wonder if I need an AirLens in the system.

I’m asking myself the same…if i2S is not crucial in terms of SQ and USB is pretty close…then there are more streamers to choose between..and I dont need to wait for the AirLens:grinning_face:

The further postponing of the AL must be even a bigger disappointment for PSA than for us, for sure.
I too had plans to do a streamer upgrade shortly. We can now say longly, after hearing the latest update from uncle Paul.
As for myself, it makes me even more curious what the AL will bring to the equation in terms of SQ when it sees the light of day.

In the meantime, it’s good to hear your various perspectives on your current streaming equipment. This situation will make us even more conscious of where the market is at and what products may suit us best in enjoying e.g. the MK2 and the rest of our rigs with maximum SQ for the coming years.
Please keep sharing your thoughts, ideas and suggestions!

Sounds like the delay on the AL may be awhile. Might need to consider something else in the interim. The HoloAudio Red would be a less expensive alternative.

I fear with these additional delays PS Audio may well miss the train on having a great pairing solution for the MkII. There are at least two other devices already out that, galvanic isolation not withstanding, can already do what the AL is purported will do. Given reports that the MkII’s own galvanic isolation may essentially make galvanic isolation all but unnecessary anywhere else, it raises the question as to whether the AL brings anything to the table that will keep it in the running for at least MkII owners.
