Directstream Mk 2 observations

At this price the mk2 should have included networking

I don’t agree with that. Look at the Chord TT2 or the Dave. No networking, both fantastic.

Don’t be grumpy @lufubu, be happy! The MKII is a fine piece of kit that many will enjoy for years to come. All you need to do is play Trygve Seim’s Sol’s Song and you’ll have a smile on your face in no time!

You forget he’s obviously smarter than everyone at PSA and even Ted just ask him. Oh wait you won’t have to he will tell you on his own.

I think deep down inside he’s a softy. Crusty on the outside and all warm and gooey on the inside!

:people_hugging:

they’re the older generation, look at bartok

If you think Bartok is the standard them why don’t you own one?

i will take

Sure, but the price points are kinda close and both don’t have networking. Clearly I can find other newer examples if need be, but I know you get the point.

And let’s not forget, the Bartok is twice the price.

I think the main problem is that psaudio chose ds as a competitor in mk2. I don’t find it right that DS is degraded to this extent. After all, you made it and sold it. The same approach was applied to the bridge. This is partly because potential customers are seen as DS owners. For this reason, the life of the mk2 is until a new one comes out. That’s why I won’t buy the mk2. I won’t buy it even if it’s the best dac in the world.

Everything ages. When BMW and Porsche come out with a new model, they are often much better then the previous version. Sure there are some things that stand the test of time, a Eames recliner for example, but that was designed to be “forever”, the DS certainly wasn’t.

I do hope you get a chance to hear a MKII, I think it will change your mind. The MKI is still fantastic and a great value on the used market, I don’t think any of us are kicking it to the curb as trash. For some it’s simply time to move on.

Not having the networking / streaming on board means avoiding the need for lots of expensive isolation in the box too. It also makes it easier to update and swap those items out, or just for folks to go with what they like. We are spoiled for choice of inputs with the MK2. And we have personal contact with the designer as well as the owner. OK, I know other firms like that. But both that come to mind from personal experience are at double the price point
and in one case with a much more limited feature set.

Indeed, the MK2 is based on design choices aimed to improve its SQ. And it paid off, as many topics on this forum show. Remember the bridge was an add on (too).
If functionality and price point is your thing, feel free to investigate other products. There are lots available.

The MkII has some stiff competition
from itself. Watching the Ted and Paul video for the 3rd time, it dawned on me how much Ted has to explore with new OS configurations like the potential ones he mentioned using one FPGA for left one one for right, or for different processes.

As anyone like myself who bought the MKI in its infancy can attest, the product came a long way from its original performance.

What
?

That’s exactly what consumers should want. Any time a product is replaced its resale value drops, but what really sucks is when the new version isn’t much better.

Nobody is really buying PSA for the resale value anyway because it isn’t great (just check the ads). But you can trade in, right?

So bottom line when the new version trounces the old version that’s a good thing (unless you just bought old version at full price)

The MKI was out there for 8 years. In audio terms that’s a lifetime. Not sure what your point is here you are trying to make. The MKII used all the experience with the MKI and Ted and company did an amazing job fixing all the weak points and expanding the memory so they can keep this thing going for a long time too. Add in the FULL trade in of your old one. Yeah its half trade half credit, but I dare you to find another that does that. BTW right now that trade in value alone is worth more than what it was selling for in the market for a few years.

I don’t think it really benefits anyone to try to convince him. He said he wouldn’t even buy it if it’s the best dac in the world. Obviously there’s immense bias against mk2. To each their own. Let’s move on from feeding the troll.

Troll? I think this is a forum where we can freely express our thoughts. I did not target anyone, I did not insult anyone.

I’m not prejudiced against the MK2 either, I’m sure it’s true and it’s a very good dac. What I am against is that, as you have stated, the comparison with dac 8 years ago has become almost the only criterion.
