Directstream Mk 2 observations

It is strange that PSA has not released a FW update to at least fix some of the bugs. They do not have to wait until ALL the bugs are fixed.

Drowning in problems?

I feel like I opened up a hornet’s nest with my post, and yet it shows that even though I have a production unit (that I waited over two months for), certain issues have not yet been resolved.

Funny… I thought that by waiting so long, things like this would’ve been resolved.

FWIW, listening tonight, it seems to be related to changes in sample rates between tracks… yes?

It’s a small shop with what appears from the outside to have limited S/W talent. What other reason could there be? Ted can crank out FW updates pretty quickly. But, by all accounts he’s a rare and extraordinarily gifted engineer. The UI side of the house seems to be the issue.

Please explain, Vince. How does an audible glitch relate to a UI issue? I consider UI to be menus, options, etc. This is an audible issue.

The audible glitch is in Ted’s wheelhouse, I thought I had explained that, perhaps I was too vague. I am under the impression Ted has resolved the pop/tick issue. I was waxing poetic about the UI. No network connection (ethernet or wifi) terrible font sizes, format display, etc… all the things listed here and elsewhere.

I think there’s a good list over here:

I think in simple terms:

Ted = code that effects sound (ie what ground lift does DAC etc)
UI = how the user makes the changes. (these changes tell teds code what to do) Also how the remote interacts with the device.

I’ve not had reason to follow all the threads closely until I came up with a specific issue, so if I missed something in a previous discussion, my apologies.

I totally understand. There’s thousands of posts.

I think it would be timely to hear from @Paul about progress on these issues.

In an ironic way, PSA has much incentive to release earlier than other companies who internally test because of the fanbase willing to pay full price for far-from-fully-baked units (the beta program) and even more incentive when that program is what PSA rely on to late-stage-development/production test by having paying customers gratuitously test for and identify the bugs rather than using a more traditional (internal) test department.

But then the forums are littered with the dirty laundry, which is the downside for PSA from getting all that $$ early when the units are not ready for prime time (the muting issue, ticks/pops/thumps, etc.).

Most of the time it seems to work out well for them though. Most fans are pretty forgiving.

My point is that with so many willing to be full-price-paying-and-gratuitous-time-and-labor-donating beta testers, it shouldn’t be too surprising, as it incentivizes premature release

Have TBH- I had a MK2 ordered and paid for, but after seeing the various issues still being worked through I cancelled the order.
Had my Mk1 modded instead.

It may not be at same level as the MK2 in the long run over time, but the MK2 was a pretty big investment even with the trade in.
My MK1 has no hardware or software issues in my setup and handles anything I throw at it so that is good. LOL.

I am sure in a few months it will all be worked out.

not a UI issue

i have similiar issues, doesnt matter if i am useing i2s or coax, disc or stream

Hopefully this wait doesn’t break Hegel’s record for delivering Roon Ready certification. Product details mentioned that it was arriving “soon” from launch. I understand Covid would throw a wrench into things, but three years?! By the time it arrived, it had already been relegated to the bedroom system.

Yet configurd by the UI.

oops

perhaps, reminder of second on the list…

This is a great point, much as it pains me to say so. Everyone, including PSA, gets comfortable with the environment they’re in. It also leads to an ability to “accept it” if some things are never quite actually fixed. Not saying that will happen in this case, but it’s an easy trap to fall into.

Well said, but not atypical IME. One wonders regarding the efficay of the beta test program. One the other hand a very nice discount was offered to those early adopters. For me, I don’t need the aggravation when attempting to listen to music.

What about contacting them and having them hold the product until the UI and FW updates are released. Collectively the pending buyers have significant leverage if they lobby for updates as a group. Good luck either way.
