Directstream Mk 2 observations

No. I wasn’t able to “fool” Roon by changing to another DAC name. Apparently, Roon gets some kind of feedback from the DAC to identify it. I think this is something that PS Audio needs to work with Roon to resolve.

I tried it one month ago, I still like BHK pre in the chain. But I will need to try it again because MK2 sounds a lot better now compared to back then.

Hi - I wasn’t clear. Within the SOtM 200ultra settings is there an option to switch from Native DSD to DoP?

I had to make this change on our Rendu. I play DSD256 from Roon through a Rendu without issue.

I compared Mk2 driving M1200 directly again. Without BHK pre in the chain, MK2 driving M1200 sounded much better than one month ago. The sound is faster, clean, and with excellent control of all frequencies, and the music does not sound digital at all.

On instrumental and large symphonies, I really like how MK/M1200 sounded. However, when I switched to a Nicki Parrott “Papa Loves Ramo” SACD, I heard quite a bit short fall. With BHK pre, I could hear the inner detail of her voice and how she holds her breath, without pre. I only heard a voice. The BHK pre has brought in more tube magic that makes the voices special.

Mk2 driving amp directly sounds great, and you need a great preamp in the same caliber as BHK or higher to show off MK2.

Yes, changing the setting in the SOtM from DoP to Native did the trick, playing 4xDSD now without issue. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks, Ted. Very interesting, I’ll look forward to it.

Thanks for sharing! You’ve saved me a journey of trying out the same, knowing the BHK still delivers extra goodness :grinning:

After a week of playing music day and night at medium volume the new MK2 sounds glorious. It now has surpassed theTambaqui in playback SQ and far surpassed the modded MK1 that it replaced. What a bargain.

Wow!
Thanks of keeping all of us posted. I ordered a MK2 yesterday, partly due to comments such as yours.

Plug it in and let it play music for a week before you judge. Mine was good from the first hit but after a week of playing round the clock it is a different animal.

I agree, day after day it’s still growing after 2 weeks and it’s not subtle the improvement!
At the moment I’m finding a fullness and clarity so pleasant, detailed and engaging. The bright step seems to be still far away, in fact I’m preferring the sound without the absorber tweak for a while. Like a warm wool sweater, the night in the mountains in front of the fireplace!

I received my MII last Monday. At the beginning I had a slight glitch. There was a sticker over the power inlet stating “do not plug in with power on”. The power switch has an O and an I on it. O could stand for on or off. Technical support stated the the O should be depressed for off .
Having gotten beyond that, I connected it and powered it up. Outside of checking to make sure it is playing music don’t bother listening to it for at least 2 or 3 hours because you will be disappointed.I waited 6 hours before sitting down for a 2 hour session and it was much improved. I kept it running for 7 straight days and I think it is broken in.
I really enjoyed the M1 but the M2 is better across the board. The most noticeable part to me was how holographic it was on some recordings compared to the M1. The soundstage was wider and higher as well as more forward. The amount of detail was amazing. I ran the M1 with the Bridge II but had to settle for a USB connection until the Digital Lens is available.
If you have an M1 you will be delighted with the M2.

I can’t understand anyone saying someone would be disappointed with the mk 2 cold out of the box. I recognized the benefits of it from the first minute of turn on!

I hope very much for the same experience by early February!

If you had the M1 the M2 out of of the box sounded disjointed in comparison.

I did have a mk 1 when I swapped out to the mk 2. The improvement was immediate even before the break in period. My mk 2 was delivered with UI firmare 2.3.0 and fpga 173 beta. That may be the difference.

I am curious as to how many users of the M2 thought it sounded fine right from the start and did not require any break in.
