They sure are. I’ve been listening to mine on and off now for 6 hours!

Running Roon Rock on an Intel NUC into one side of an EtherREGEN.
Other side of the switch goes to a Magna Mano streamer running as a Roon Bridge via RoPieee. Output of the Mano goes to I2S input on the DS2.

Happy so far  Mostly positive on the SQ front. I feel it is lacking some bass slam compared to same path to the DS1 Snr. But am not too concerned at this very early stage of break in.

Love the tactile feel of the front panel menu control.
Display is good when in front of the DAC using the menu.
I have the front panel display dimmed so visibility from the seating position is not important to me.

A couple of questions if I may. I think both have been asked and answered previously by Ted, but my forum search skills must be lacking…

  1. I have a red circle showing on the upper RHS of the display. What does that indicate?
  2. What volume level on the DS2 matches a DS1 Snr volume of 92.
I use a preamp and know ideal volume settings for many favorite tracks. So I’d like to match output levels if possible.

How exciting!!

I managed to find Ted’s run down on what the red and green lights mean when they pop up on the DS2. I don’t think it’s any problem if the music is flowing, but over to Ted:

Red and Green light indicators - all inputs

Red and Green light indicators and I2S

Will love to hear how the AU implementation goes for you as the hours clock up!

I would like to see an answer to your number two as well. I may vary with which FPGA FW you are using.

My understanding is that the DS Mk II is 3db louder via XLR balanced, hence you need to reduce the number by 6. Of course you’ll need the display on the DS and be close enough to see the little number.

My assumption as well, based upon Ted’s writing here, but I barely notice the difference. I thought the gain on the mkii would be higher than it is.

Thanks all for your responses.
I get the red indicator on I2S even when music is being received from the Mano streamer. So maybe it’s a PSAudio-specific thing as Ted alluded to.

Another question: Should I be able to see the incoming sample rate displayed anywhere? I see “I2S 1 -/-” to the left of the red dot.
I’m wondering if the -/- is where I should expect to see the sample rate?

Thanks!

There’s a bug in the UI code that doesn’t display the sample rate and sample width if the red light is on. It should be fixed in the next release.

Thanks Ted!
I know you hear this all the time but I want to say thanks for producing such a wonderful DAC

I don’t mind hearing it again

Hi @Interested - did you have a trade in (eg DSD Mk1), or outright purchase?

@philip-ganinternode-on-net seems they do trade in and outright …

Thanks for that - I must have looked before they posted that. Not as good a deal as US customers get but definitely worth thinking about!

Hi there Philip, I organised a trade in of my DS1 for the DS2 in November and to my great surprise, the DS2 turned up today!!

I put on PS Audio’s burn in track on repeat play for 2 hrs before having a listen.

I know the unit needs 500 hours to settle, but first up impression is that there is a fairly noticeable upgrade in sound staging, with better vocals (music via coax) and dialogue (via toslink) on the DS2 compared to the DS1. Thanks @tedsmith!! :+1:

Thanks to @danofesherintheuk for the tip to reduce the fixed output by six, from that used for the DS1, which means no change is needed in volume with the BHK Pre :grinning:

For those who’ve sorted out the initial set up issues; is there a way to get the display to just show the input name and its sample rate? I.e., that they’re featured and easily visible across the room?

I thought this was on the software to-do list but can’t see anything in the manual or sub-menus on the system so far…

Currently, no.

Thanks for the heads up. Will stop looking!

I can see now this was flagged by @tedsmith as being on the list of changes for the UI, just had hoped it might have been in place.

Hi @tedsmith and @aaron, if you’re in the process of updating the software for the display to allow the user to choose the default display, perhaps you could also look into how pre-selected input names appear on the display? At least on my unit, when using the coaxial input, the “Streamer” input name shows up as “Streame” in the small text.

Day 2 of the DS2 – really quite enjoying it!! :grinning:

how long did everyone wait to get theirs? Placed my order last week with confirmation Jan 3rd.

I think @brian.fitterman has been waiting around the same amount of time as you.

You’re dealing with Holidays and FedEx be patient and maybe hold your breath a little because of FedEx.
