I did have issues with dropouts when playing music with JRiver via usb. My unit returned to PS Audio for a revision. I have not received it back yet but will report if the issue has been corrected.
Howdy All
Iām working on the ticks and pops, but I canāt reproduce any here with either the PST or foobar2000, JRiver MC, etc.
Could some of you who have reproduceable ticks and pops send me private messages with your reproduction descriptions?
I only want issues from FPGA version 179. 179 fixes a few issues from 173 so if it doesnāt reproduce with 179 it doesnāt help me.
Iāll need to know if the problem is 100% reproducible, whether it always sounds the same or varies in loudness, etc. Iād like to know if you remember having the same problem with the original DS or not.
Iāll need to know what your source is. If itās a PST Iāll need to know if you are playing a CD, a CDR, a DVD, DVD-A, DVD-R, DVD-RW, from the USB stick, ⦠[Edit: Oh, and the version of the PST software.]
If you are playing with JRiver MC, foobar2000, etc. Iāll need to know if you are using the Direct X, kernel streaming, WASAPI, ASIO, etc. and how you have the track transitioning set. E.g. are you using cross fades between tracks, etc. how big are your audio buffers, etc.
Iāll also need to know if you are simply falling thru from one track to the next, or if you are skipping to a new track, or if you are using some kind of seek (say by clicking on a seek bar, etc.)
Iāll need to know what sample rates the first track and the second track are.
It would be good to know how any other configuration parameters are set as well.
Feal free to ask questions, etc., but letās keep it to private messages so I can keep the various issues separated and make it easier for me to track.
Hi Ted,
I have a beta unit that originally produced no sound and had to send it back to PS Audio. I updated to 179 after getting it back from them.
I do get a little bit of crackling at the beginning of a DSD track and sometimes a 176 or 192 PCM track. The strange thing I noticed was when I experimented with streaming with USB versus i2s using a Matrix. When using USB, DSD files regularly skipped inadvertently like a skipping record during playback. This immediately caught my attention. This occurred consistently on all the DSD files I played, but not the PCM files. When I switched back to i2s the skipping stopped. The crackling happens with both USB and i2s.
I hope this helps you.
If you get regular skipping with DSD over USB probably you havenāt installed the USB drivers (see the Drivers tab on the Download page under Support) or your source isnāt set up quite correctly, perhaps it needs more buffering.
If you are using auto input select and have multiple sources active they can āfightā when one starts up while the other is playing giving a crackling sound. Most of the time this doesnāt happen, but if it does in your setup you might want to explicitly select the input you want.
Thanks Ted. I will try this today.
@tedsmith how is the progress on the ticking issues. Do you think that this can be resolved on 180 release?
Iāve got more ticks suppressed. Weāre still testing. It wonāt be 180 since weāre already on 184
Is the 184 available? Did Aaron send it out?
We will let everyone know when thereās a new release. We donāt know whether weāll be waiting for the new UI features yet or not. At the moment tho some ticks and pops have gone away, there is a bonus fart of noise now and then
As long as itās a quiet fart of noise.
The danger is it is a woopie cushion fart!
Have you taken software design leads from Elon Musk and the Tesla developers?
Elon would make a mess out of everything just like he did twitter!
@tedsmith Does the MKII have balance control like the DS?
I wonder if Paul still is that big fan of him after his personality, practices and opinions should have gotten obvious for finally everyoneā¦but he certainly innovated more than anyone could imagine and quite sure will further do.
Yes, tho I donāt know where it is in the UI and I donāt see anything happening with the remote.
Balance is in first submenu after center button double press. So it is easiest of any of the features except volume which is on remote and needs no center button press
My DS remote has balance at the bottom. Maybe that will work also?
The remote does not control balance on the mk 2 yet. It may if they ever implement it in the UI.
