And also hoping it doesn’t take a new war to force the issue like it has in the past.
If you can find Braulio, I highly recommend it. It’s Swiss, but it’s roots are Italian.
There’s also Amaro di Sant’Antimo which is made by Monks in Tuscany.
Amaro’s very much reflect the regions they are produced and the time of year the ingredients are harvested. It’s a fantastic rabbit hole!
You got me interested in Amaro, Total Wine nearby has some and I may get a bottle tomorrow.
It’s a sipping digestive. Some like it chilled. I prefer room temp in a short glass to let it breathe. The aroma is fantastic.
Nice! Sounds perfect for holidays.
At the end of a challenging dinner, Amaro can really help you to survive and stand up from the table.
Most of them are related to different regions of Italy, made with “fragrances” typical of that area.
Anyhow I’m not a big fun of Amaro, to be honest they are more in distilled family than wine world.
I strongly recommend as higher quality alternative a Passito, it comes from aged wine liquor, I consider it more elegant, sweet and pleasant. Not a “banal” digestive. You can find it white or red (commonly known as Moscato).
Passito di Pantelleria in Sicily area is an example.
Muffato della Sala (Antinori branded) is one of my favorites.
Moscato di Scanzo (very rare and typical of my area near Bergamo hills in Lombardy)

You can find as many Passito or Moscato as provinces in Italy, so there are lots of different variants.
Is perfect at the end of the dinner with chocolate or sweet desserts, or alone after dinner on a terrace moonlighting!
Give it a try, trust in me guys!
I guess I know where I am going tomorrow… The liquor store!
Ah, bene! Another excellent choice. I agree, a Moscato can be a wonderful post dinner treat.
Great! it is time to try something new other than Whiskey and CA/French wine! The timing is perfect. If I get drunk on Holidays that is perfectly okay with my wife.
Today everything here is closed, that gives me some time to check these out for shopping tomorrow.
Luca, I have port / dessert wine glasses that are of similar, but not of the same shape. I love this one you showed! Can you tell us who makes it?
There’s a monastery full of Monks somewhere in Lombardy praying for your soul right now. This time it’s regarding Amaro. I am guessing there’s been plenty of other times where they may have found a need to pray for your soul…
Luca, if you haven’t yet, try the Vecchio Amaro. It is less bitter than many of the others. More earthy. Less herbal.
Delightful post. Thank you!
Liquor stores closed day after Christmas in TX when it falls on a Sunday. I guess state wants everyone to have a holiday off rather than just a normal no liquor sale on Sunday off
I wish every State did that. But only if the hourly employees are paid as a holiday.
Don’t worry there is in Piemonte an entire nunnery, where (unofficially) is produced one of the sweetest and lightest Moscato I ever tasted, on whome prayers I’m counting now, I hope!
They are mainly for “grappa” (another famous distilled) but I like also for Passito/Moscato in small quantities.
An expert would suggest for Passito/Moscato more this one:
Talking about Christmas gifts received today, my son (I’m really proud) bought this one for me:
Back to vinyl!
Thanks Luca. I do have the second type shown, but not the first. It looks great, and I could see where it would enhance the bouquet of an after dinner liquor.
