DS vs DS Mk2?

Order #254130 (Dec 23), no ship date yet…

I’ve been wanting to put astro turf or sinilar on my ceiling for a while now.
If I do, I shall glue a Tee and golf ball up there too

I ordered Dec 27 and it was processed Dec 28 with shipping “1 to 2 weeks”. Presumably yours would ship first. Maybe it’s time for an email. I’ll check tomorrow.

Me too/I share your sentiments…

That said, I have a plan (Shhhh…don’t tell anyone):

I love the B II Ethernet Card and its ease of use/approach to network streaming. I have to find something to compete with it that sounds at least as good and has most, in not all, of its capabilities. (I don’t “do” USB by the way.)

The AirLens may or may not be the ticket. Even though its not critical, I don’t want to give up full rendering (unfolding) of MQA files if I can avoid doing so. My DS Sr./B II combo and my Roon/Tidal combo give me that, on the intermittent occasion I discover a track that sounds best in that format with that renderer/player/source combination.

Here is the (not so) secret plan:

  1. Keep looking for a comparable, if not identical in capability, Ethernet streaming gizmo.
  2. Modify the DS Sr. MK I with the outboard power supply Jeff Richards offered (I bought one but have not installed it because I have Bridge II and no other streamer at the moment).
  3. Wait for the early MK II adopters to abandon their MK II’s for the TSS DAC in a year or two and pick up an MK II for a price that rivals if does not beat the current trade in offer for the MK I owners.

Of course all of this goes out the window If I wake up one morning and decide to throw caution to the wind and grab an MK II. Usually, I am pretty patient about waiting for yesterday’s SOTA/gotta have it gizmo to be available at a steep discount when the next, incrementally best thing becomes available though. (Case in point - my transport is a used DMP rather than the current PST. I’ll probably have a PST someday if I live long enough for the next big thing to come out and compete with the PST at its price and performance point. Here’s hoping anyway…)

Gotta love early adopters and the hand-me-down market that serves those that can live with kit that is just old enough to no longer be SOTA.

Cheers.

Guessing many will trade-in. Of course that depends on what the trade-in value looks like.

If you want to look at something in the meantime I suggest you follow the reviews for the Kitsune HoloAudio Red when they start coming out. At $750, it looks pretty capable. You could use it now with the MKI via I2S.

Yep, got my eye on the Red.

Need to confirm I2S out compatibility with DS DAC inputs…

This is from the Red’s manual on how to configure the I2S via DIP switches on the Red.

BTW - It’s $798 vs $750.

I am afraid I need a translation.

:slightly_smiling_face:

Sorry, I updated the post above.

So I just need to ID the DS DAC’s pin configuration, correct?

Yup - I was just looking for it, I have it around here somewhere but it’s alluding me. I suppose we can ask Ted.

Thanks for the assist, Vince.

If it’s the same configuration as the Holo dac’s, it would be ALT2.

Here’s the PSA Spec. I agree with @st50maint, it’s the same as the Holo Dac config ALT2:

Another choice is Euphony Summus. This year they have Summus2 and 4 servers which is different from when I bought it last year (Summus2 w/ 2TB interior SSD). Its I2S is compatible with DS and DS MK2.

In fact, it is selling at least $1k cheaper than what I paid. It is Roon ready, or you can use their own Stylus software to stream or play from exterior/interior storage. I found this server sounds great with the right setup. It is a great bargain. I need to buy a stream three times more to beat it I believe.

Update request sent…

My dilemma too with the DS1/Bridge II and the DS2 and AirLens developing on different cycles.

With that, I have a Lindemann Limetree Bridge II doing network duties. It has galvanic isolation of its outputs and I found it provided a step up in sound quality, with the DS1, compared to the PS Audio Bridge II.

It’s sounding great with the DS2!

Given the DS2 won’t unfold MQA for you, you probably won’t be able to get a full MQA unfold on changeover, unless the MQA maxes out at or below 96kHz. In this instance, the AirLens or Roon (both unfold to 96kHz) would do the job before it reaches the DS2.

Just popped on a David Elias MQA recording - while I’m only getting MQA decoding to 88.2k / 24 via Roon (rather than the 192k /24 of the same through the PS Audio Bridge II), it’s really quite enjoyable. Lovely dynamics.

I think there’s more to be gained from a part unfolding, and then the better sound quality of the DS2, than a full MQA unfolding in the PS Audio Bridge II and then the DS1 taking over. But just my thoughts!

Good food for thought; thank you.

Cheers.

Just sent an email. Will post when I hear back.

reply from PSA consultant… expected shipment receipt of boards “any day now”, new DSD MK2 builds batch by next week.
