Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition

what other questions are there?

That’s pretty much what I was thinking about the A6 when I started looking into it. Since I have a Mk. I DSD, the I2S is the sonically superior input (at least it is for the DMP), so the A8 offers that output. I don’t use any form of DSP currently, so that aspect adds to it as well. The question is, how much are those worth to me if I decide to add a standalone streamer. 1k seems like a lot in some ways and like a steal in others. I haven’t really streamed much until lately, TBH, mostly serving files to the DAC, but Spatial Audio from Apple and Amazon got me doing it more and now to the point of wanting a quality streamer for 2 channel as I begin to explore catalogs and new releases in their catalogs. I’ve at least got an Apple TV now streaming 2 channel lossless music to the DSD with an extractor as well as to my AVR for the multichannel offerings. That will tie me over until I make a decision if, or which route to go. The times, they are a changin’ I suppose.

I don’t know how to answer that. If someone is looking for a streamer only, then I guess I’d feel like spending any money on stuff that isn’t a streamer is not a value proposition. Others may disagree.

I’ve been spending some time with the A6 Master Edition using the built in DAC lately. I’ve been listening to the Fast Roll-Off(Minimum) filter. This option seems to have a almost ā€œtube likeā€ character. Somewhat soft, smooth, lush and warm. I tone down the warmth somewhat by one click down from mid bass and deep bass with my equalizer. I’ve become enchanted with the combination of apparent depth in the soundstage and really nice texture from bottom to top. Either the sound of this DAC is improving over time or I’m just coming to appropriate its strong points more.

Well you are implying that the product is compromised as a streamer because it offers more. And it may be. So if it is compromised - what stand alone streamer is better for 800 bucks?

My main reason for getting one was to remove my computer from the chain. So that works for me.

Timm understands.
You A6 haters need to find another thread to bash the topic.

In my case, Holo audio Red replaced Auralic Mini, and DMP-A6 replaced the Red. A6 is the best of the bunch in my headphone setup when I compare the sum of SQ and SW, and I am using it as a streamer. Is A6 overcharged at $850 as a streamer? No. Would the absence of DAC/preamp cut the cost to half or less? Definitely not. The DAC in A6 is a freebie to me and I might get a headphone amp just to try it. I am curious what other pure streamers are there at this price. Complains without solutions don’t help.

For the money, probably none. And yes, anything that’s built to any given price point, that’s designed to do multiple things, likely will not do one, some, or all of those things as well as a much higher priced items that’s designed to do only one of those things*. I fail to see why this should get anyone upset. It’s just a basic design expectation.

No @aangen, I’m not an Eversolo hater. It just seems to look that way to you because you’re an owner. It always amazes me how defense mechanisms get raised with conversations like this. If you go to the HiFi Rose forum, you’ll find I speak very highly of how great a job Eversolo has done with their app - and how responsive they are, by comparison to Rose. If Eversolo comes out with a streamer only S10 next year, and it’s cheaper and better than my RS130, I’ll be happy to make the trade. So how about we call this a draw? :slightly_smiling_face: :v:

*(please don’t use a cheap multifunction digital Timex compared to a Rolex as a counter example a la accuracy :upside_down_face:. That would be apples and oranges, as it is a comparison based on completely different technologies.)

If Eversolo is not using the PS Audio I2S protocol the A8 will be not fit the bill for you either with the Mk I. You need to find out which pinout they are using first.

this is the eversolo’s IIS pinout… maybe there’s a similar diagram out there for PS Audio, ahdunno

It has some configurability but would certainly find out before I ordered.

Audiolab 9000n is suppose to be a really good streamer

Made a fairly cool discovery today…

Was on a little road trip yesterday, and I decided to fire up Pandora, which I think has a really good ā€œdiscoveryā€ algorithm. Create a station with a few artists, and you can have it hunt down either ā€œtop tracksā€ or ā€œdeep cutsā€ or ā€œmellowā€ or whatever. It’s got like six different modes to customize your station. Love that. I wish Roon Radio had it.

Anyway, got back home and I could airplay Pandora from my phone/computer to the Eversolo. Kinda cool, but not the greatest, as I was only getting low-quality AAC through Airplay. You can’t play it from the streamer directly because Pandora isn’t a part of the Eversolo’s App library…

But you can add it.

No guarantees, no idea if this bricks anything, but it worked for me. I’m on a mac, FWIW.

Lots of documentation for this, but in a nutshell, I downloaded the Pandora APK to my computer from here:

Download Pandora APK - Latest Version 2023

Then I put in the Eversolo’s local IP address in the web browser, adding :18888

So, in my case it was 192.168.4.217:18888 (this is a local IP address, so sharing this isn’t a security issue)

A window will come up asking you to find the APK file, and you’ll select it from your downloads or desktop or wherever it downloaded to.

It will upload to your DMP-A6.

Then on your A6 you’ll need to enter your Pandora username and password.

That’s it.

Now playing pandora direct from the Eversolo. :+1:

Wow! I can’t conceive how this is even possible. Maybe I’m not following you completely here. Pandora is not a hi res service. Is it up sampling or something?
Oh, never mind. I misunderstood. You now have Pandora app on your A6 not high res Pandora on your A6. But it’s cool anyway.

My bad. it’s not Hi-Res. (I did initially type that, assuming the 192k on the screen meant 192k FLAC, but it’s a 192k MP3 stream.

I didn’t listen closely, and I made an assumption.

Sounds great for dinner party background music and in the car tho.

And nice that I can just start the stream from the Eversolo, rather than have to tether it to the phone.

With the later updates I see internet radio stations are now part of the Eversolo app. Fooled around with it a little bit but Qobuz sound quality has kind of killed my enjoyment of lower resolution services.

I will be honest, ā€œcriticalā€ listening is only a small percentage of my listening. Maybe 10%?

I don’t have a ā€œlistening roomā€ or a super-revealing system. (It’s really nice, but not like some here.) Main speakers are in my living room, and have satellite speakers that play on the main floor in the dining room, kitchen and den. Kinda open floor plan.

I usually have the stereo on when I’m cooking, or working around the house, or have friends over for social time and conversation. So in those cases, I can’t (and don’t try to) tell 192k MP3 from 192k hi-res FLAC. And sometimes, in those cases, variety and discovery is more important than sheer sound quality.

If i sit down with a dram of whiskey for a dedicated session, then I focus more on it.

I understand that take on music listening completely. But with sensory overload nowadays from internet, TV and movies I really don’t listen like that much anymore. I don’t even turn on the radio in the car now. I kind of just enjoy the silence. I do listen seriously now more than ever due to the vast library of high quality music available through streaming and the fact that with more time available since retirement I really get into indulging my hi fi hobby. Life is good.
