Final version firmware released: 1.94 December 9, 2016, Now Interim 2.08 March 9, 2018

Yes - they apparently decided to move out all of their stock of DSMPs and they are now all sold. I cannot understand why they sold them at such a low price. They apparently sold them all within about 24 hours of their announcement of their offer, which is not surprising considering the low price.

Even if they sold them at cost, sweet deal offers make happy customers, and happy customers turn into returning customers which is good for business.

I wonder if it’s possible for somebody to post a list of problems that are being addressed with the soft/firmware re-write.

Also: Are there perhaps issues that will never be “software addressable”?

For example:- I’ve got a number of disks, SACD ISO’s; ISO2DSD used to extract DFF, and then written to -R DVD. So I’d play one disk without a problem, then the next one will show that it’s playing; yet there is appears to be no output to the pre- or amps. Then i’d switch the DMP off and on (back switch), with problem solved and disk plays now without a problem.

Anyone else experience this?

Actually no. Let me try to explain that:

IMO the worst thing about the old code is that (in a handwaving sense) it isn’t thread safe: There isn’t really any protection around communicating with the underlying hardware so various commands can stomp on each other. With that problem it’s hard to predict what problems can happen and only experience will tell which ones happen and how often. With architectural problems like this it’s not even worth the time to try to fix any given problem - after the code is rewritten then problems that then exist can be debugged and fixed.

Like I speculated above - I’m reasonably sure that most of the flaky problems people have had will be fixed - the hardware isn’t that flaky.

I wonder if there is anyway to change the Topic Title for this thread. Final Version Firmware Released is not really applicable anymore.

I can change the title, but would we change it to which would be more accurate?

I don’t think the title needs changing. People who have an interest in this topic know where to find it even if the title has become redundant over time.

I agree with brodricj – those of us who follow the issue know this is where to look.

The title reflects the eternal optimists that we are! That firmware will be released some day …

The eternality of my optimism expired.

Brodricj, you certainly have made that clear! No offense intended, we all have our breaking points.

I think changing the title would be helpful. I’ve been lured to this thread many times in the past several weeks thinking there was an actual firmware release due the title but of course it hasn’t happened yet as we know.

How about “DMP Firmware Discussion” as a title and then “DMP Firmware Released” as a title once it does occur.

How about adding the date of the firmware release?

“Final version firmware released - December 9, 2016”

Like infinities, some eternalities are bigger than others.

Peanut Butter (and others who I may have misled). I posted earlier about how I thought my DMP issues were worsening. I now know that it is not so.
I upgraded my PC in December - one of the upgrades being a new Dell 27inch 4K monitor with a native resolution of 3840x2160. I use Sonore’s ISO2DSD utility to extract .DSF from SACD ISO’s - however this program seems to have an issue with Windows 10, so the program font is not adjusted to 200% as per general display settings; and/or settings elsewhere. In the process I extracted a few ISO’s with the Philips DSF option ticked instead of Sony.
These disks, prior to listening, got mixed up with other disks - some correctly extracted to Sony DSF; others .FLAC or .APE etc. For this reason it took me quite a while to figure out the problem.
Just for the record, to summarize my issues:

  1. Most frequent issue: I often have to press “play” a couple of times before a disk start playing.
  2. A disk sometimes “plays”, by all appearances; but there’s no sound. Fixed by hard power recycling the DMP.
  3. Lately (and I don’t know yet if this is a Red Cloud issue?): On some tracks I seem to experience pops; or crackling - which, were they louder, could’ve been mistaken for distortion. Taking the DS down to 95; and the BHK up a few notches higher, seems to alleviate the problem but I cannot be sure yet.

As I’ve said before: I love my DMP and won’t part with it, despite the issues. That said, I whole-heartedly agree with st50maint’s suggestion above.

[Elk, could you perhaps change my name from “Paulsquirrel” to PLCOMP? Do you know how this happens? Thanks!]

I changed it for you.

Thanks Paul

I started to hear the pops and ticks with sacd’s to the DS dac. Ted informed me of why, Thanks Ted. I simply went back to Huron for now. I don’t hear it with Huron, so I’ll wait until it’s corrected. No rush. Still sounds amazing!

Hey all - note that there is an “Interim Update” to the DMP Firmware. Works better!

I did see that today. It’s 2.04? Or something like that. I’ll try it tomorrow.
