Firmware updates and fixes for the new Directstream MK2

Ugh, that does not sound good. I dont think people had this issue. I hope its not an issue with the DAC itself. Maybe a full factory reset then load 2.5.0

EDIT: Ted beat me to it.

Thanks for the input @tedsmith

I did a factory reset and tried the other I2S input. Must be something else in my system, although I’ve swapped out all cables (including the speakers and their cables) The power amp is a Jeff Rowland and has dual speaker outputs and I tried the other ones. Can’t imagine it’s the power amp though just throwing a noise on DSD.

Anyway I’ll keep thinking. Glad though it doesn’t seem to be an issue with others.

Maybe @jamesh can help help figure out what to do. I fear it may have to be sent back. If you swap L&R input cables on back of Rowland amp the sound should jump speakers thus eliminating speaker/amp, but if its only DSD it has to be either the streamer or DAC. Do you have a second stream by chance?

As I think about this, dosnt the DAC make everything input into DSD?

It’s not the streamer as it happens with the PW transport playing SACD’s via I2S into the second I2S input as well.

I’ll carry on scratching my head over this one. Don’t have many DSD files/SACD’s in any case :smiley:

Swapping cables from MK II to preamp? And or trying a different input of the pre?

@luca.pelliccioli

Yep, done that, and removed the pre from the chain altogether.
Could a defect in one channel of a power amp only become apparent on DSD? The power amp is the only thing I haven’t changed. I can’t think how this would happen, it’s all just volts down the speaker wire…

Swapping left/right input on the amps would be useful to find out if you can recreate the issue on the other speaker (or if monos swapping the amps).
It’s a trial and error process to exclude cables, amps and speakers. I agree it’s very odd if it happens only with DSD both from DAC and PST. Last chance is to try a different DAC if possible.
Good luck!

I did all of my MK2 testing with a Jeff Rowland 625 S2. I did not hear what you are hearing.

@vkennedy61 Yes I have an original 625.

@luca.pelliccioli Swapping the L/R amp inputs does not recreate the issue on the other speaker. It remains on the R one. Interesting… and the same thing happens with different speakers and speaker cables. Now I am confused… :thinking:

Wow I’m confused now too. I would normally say amp. But only DSD? How could that be?

This probably won’t help any but there is also slightly more background noise than I would expect on non-DSD files coming out of the R speaker. It’s tolerable, whilst DSD isn’t really listenable at all.

Perhaps a factory reset of the MK2 is in order. I can’t think of anything else at the moment.

Have you also an analog rig to try? To definitely exclude other than the DAC.

I hope not…seems like going backwards… :wink:

Yes tried a factory reset a couple of times.

Listen guys you’ve been great (my head’s still hurting with the fact that swapping the input cables on the amp didn’t swap the issue to the other speaker)

Last ditch effort if you have a different amp. and yeah my head spinning on that swapping cables thing too.

Yeah I’ll ask @vkennedy61 if he’ll lend me his Rowland :laughing:

We are a motley group, but we try to be helpful.

I’m sorry, did you say something? You are breaking up…

Though I would lend it to you once I find a pair of 735’s.
