First music of the day

Another cold morning. I’m looking forward to a surprise birthday party at lunch time for my favorite neighbor!

Starting off with this fabulous sounding disc.

Great 3 “Live Sessions 1994” SACD

On to the album that showed me the promise that Ross and Wilkins brought to jazz this century.

Joel Ross “Kingmaker” Blue Note cd

Alto Saxophone – Immanuel Wilkins
Bass – Benjamin Tiberio
Drums – Jeremy Dutton
Piano – Jeremy Corren
Producer, Arranged By – Harish Raghavan, Joel Ross
Vibraphone – Joel Ross

It’s going to be a messy day. . . and then it will continue to be messy and colder and snowier this week. Sigh.

Starting off with this soothing disc.

Magos Herrera “Orquideas Susurrantes (Whispering Orchids)” cd

On to

Chick Corea “Now He Sings, Now he Sobs” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

This is the best digital version I’ve heard.

Originally on Solid State, produced by Sonny Lester. Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous, Roy Haynes

Woke to about an inch of white stuff on the ground, on top of what is surely icy pavement. As long as the roads are passable tomorrow for our drive to points south, we should be fine. In the meantime this morning:

A late start to listening today–cold cold BUT sunlight–sunlight has been missing for a while.

Shirley Horn “I Thought About You–Live at Vine Street” Verve cd

A very realistic sounding recording. And Miss Horn delivers.

Followed by

Sahib Shihab “Summer Dawn” Rearward cd

Keith Jarrett/Gary Peacock/Jack DeJohnette “Yesterdays” ECM cd

Adding a little mental warmth to a cold morning. Ye olde dachshund woke me up early again!

On to

Maria Schneider and SWR Bib Band “Jazz Works & Arrangements” disc 2

A great album that I will take with me to that desert island. It’s the album that made me a Tony Williams fan.

It was “E.S.P.” that made me a Williams fan; he’s so amazing on all of those albums.

One thing I always sort of puzzled over: I think that the photos for “Sorcerer” and “Nefertiti” should be swapped. Would make more sense.

I’ve felt that way, yes.

I feel a Bromance developing

Yet another late start, but had an urge to play Alice Coltrane Ptah the El Daoud.

Another cold, still morning. My wife slept better last night than the night before, it was my turn to lose some sleep due to the dachshund being rather needy. But I am eager to get some listening in.

Starting off with Ben Allison, Steve Cardenas, Ted Nash “Tell the Birds I said Hello–the Music of Herbie Nichols” Sonic Camera cd

A very nicely recorded series of interpretations of Herbie’s music in a guitar/bass/sax trio of immense talent.

Now on to
Art Pepper “Hollywood All Star Sessions” Galaxy 5 cd set, disc 5

I’d forgotten about that Joshua Redman - that’s a ripping take on St Thomas…
