First music of the day

Cold start to the morning, but I’m getting used to that. Other parts of the nation are having heat waves. . . .

Starting off with
Miles Davis “Miles '54 (The Prestige Recordings)” 2 cd set, disc 1

This is my second copy of this set as my first copy had a defective track.

I have this material several other times elsewhere but I really enjoy the Paul Blackmore transfers Concord has been using, they sound excellent. The '55 recording set is due out soon.

Trying low gain on the phono stage, high output on the line stage today.
I think it sounds better. But tomorrow Ron won’t agree with today Ron and I’ll go back to “normal”. And so it goes.

Nduduzo Makhathini Unomkhubulwane, an excellent contemporary spiritual jazz release with strong South African musical underpinnings reflecting Nduduzo’s Zulu heritage. Recently released on the Blue Note label.

Going to be warm today, my wife will welcome that. But it will get hot up here in the listening area!

Starting off with the Mobile Fidelity Lab One Step of Miles Davis Bitches Brew.

Following up with something different

An amazing cd.

Bossarenova Trio (Paula Morelenbaum, Joo Kraus & Ralf Schmid) “Atlantico”

Angelika Niescier The Berlin Concert with bassist Christopher Tordini, and percussionist Tyshawn Sorey.

Atlantico playing now, a great listen on 96/24, extremely clear, yet easy on my ears. Thanks for your recommendation.

Glad you dug it. My general rule of thumb: I buy anything with Jacques Morelenbaum (cellist, composer, arranger) or his wife Paula–almost everything they appear on is wonderful, and anything they are leaders on is worth checking out.

Really late start to listening today. It’s warm, and Lucinda and I were having fun in the outdoors early.

Junko Onishi “Baroque” Verve cd

Re-listening to this one again today before it gets re-filed in the shelves for another who knows how long period of time. . . .

Junko Onishi - piano
Nicholas Payton - trumpet
Wycliffe Gordon - trombone
James Carter - Tenor sax, alto sax, bass clarinet, flute
Reginald Veal, Rodney Whitaker - bass
Herlin Riley - drums
Roland Guerrero - congas

And now on to

One of All “The Long Haul” Criss Cross cd

I pulled out the four cds I have from this band to re-listen to. . . had to wipe a bit of dust off the tops!

If I’m waking up this damn early, I’m listening to good music.

Whew it was a warm one last night. Finally got cool, down to 62 degrees, perfect up here in the listening area.

This is an amazing reissue that arrived two days ago. The Plangent Process restoration is amazing–and blows away the Grundman direct transfer. I wish they had not included that one and had included a Plangent Process version of the MONO mix, I love the Mono mix. I thought I knew and loved this session–now it’s taken to a new level!

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto “Getz & Gilberto” Impex Records SACD 2025

Followed by another new arrival, “Enjoying the Ride,” the 60th Anniversary box set from the Grateful Dead. First concert I pulled out, Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, CT (3/14/81), disc 1

A couple of nice little film sound track pieces from Nino Rota, Amarcord by Jaki Byard, followed by the mischievous 8-1/2 interpreted by the Carla Bley Big Band.

Beautiful morning dawning. Looking forward to our Friday breakfast out with Bridget and Dan.

Starting off with the last disc of the first concert from this new box.

“Enjoying the Ride,” the 60th Anniversary box set from the Grateful Dead. Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, CT (3/14/81), disc 3

Adrian Rollini “1929-1934” Jazz Oracle 2 cd, disc 1

An early master of the bass saxophone that I confess I like to listen to and even enjoy the dated vibe of these predominantly early dance and vocal pieces.

I haven’t played this in a long time and the system sounds so much better now. . .the excellent Davies transfers sound great!

A compelling listen, first thing in the morning. This being a Music Matters 33-1/3 rpm SXRD vinyl.
Lee Morgan Search For The New Land. Strong line-up with Grant Green, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Reggie Workman, and Billy Higgins.
My guess is the 2024 Japanese UHQCD reissue is no slouch.

Following up with one of the better Don Patterson sessions, Soul People.
