First music of the day

Early morning row for my wife and the sound of balloons drifting over the lake. The stereo can wait….

This sounds great on Qobuz in 24/44.1. It was recorded in DSD256, and I can only imagine how amazing it sounds in its native resolution. (I would not have to imagine if opt to buy the download for $33.99 USD.)

Thanks to @Rushton for alerting us to this album on Positive Feedback.

A bit cooler this morning, which is welcome. The birds are sining happily!

Another disc from “Enjoying the Ride,” the 60th Anniversary box set from the Grateful Dead.

Boston Music Hall, Boston, MA (9/15/72) disc 3

A great final set for this date:

  1. TRUCKIN’>

  2. DRUMS>

  3. THE OTHER ONE>

And then great highlights from the next night:

Boston Music Hall, Boston, MA (9/16/72)

  1. MORNING DEW>

  2. DARK STAR>

  3. BROKEDOWN PALACE

Next. . . .

Immanuel Wilkins “Blues Blood” Blue Note cd

My fourth time listening to this work. Fascinating is perhaps the best description of my continuing reaction. Very well-engineered also.

A most Thelonious morning with Thelonious Monk Underground. The Baltimore Orioles in the feeders seem to be singing along.

I agree believing 24 bit does wonders.

A nice warm morning, and I decided to leave this disc in the transport and replay it. The dynamics in the system are on full display, and this disc plays back percussion in a way I’ve never experienced it before.

Herbie Hancock “Gershwin’s World” Verve SACD

Moving on within the Grateful Dead “Enjoying the Ride” box set. . . now Fillmore East, New York, NY (4/25/71) disc 1

It’s About That Time Live at the Filmore East Miles Davis Quintet, Miles goes full on electric, this recorded just before the release of Bitches Brew, and marking the exit of Wayne Shorter.

A rather fitting follow-up listen, Weather Report

My wife decided to be up early and listen with me on this somewhat stuffy morning.

Started off with Eliane Elias “Time and Again” on Candid cd . . . the new “innovation” here is many more mult-tracked Elias voices to form a chorus . . . interesting. . .she’s done this before but more prevalent here. Also, all tunes are originals by Elias and her husband Marc Johnson.

And then on to Ruby Braff “For the Last Time” Arbors Jazz 2 cd, disc 2. Sad to know this was his last recorded performance, but it’s a good one–Scott Hamilton was a great front line partner for him, and John Bunch is a fine pianist.

Robbie Basho Guitar Soli, easy on the soul for a mid-morning listen. With a slight eastern, Indian, influence and no surprise as Robbie had been a student of Ali Akbar Kahn. Fans of Leo Kottke and John Fahey certainly would enjoy this under appreciated guitarist.

A follow-up listen, form yet another fine guitarist, Ralph Towner Diary.

Thank goodness it got cool enough to just run a fan to pull air out last night. . . about 60 degrees when I awoke this morning. Ah!

Another disc from the Grateful Dead “Enjoying the Ride” box set. . . now Fillmore East, New York, NY (4/25/71) disc 2

Some good Pigpen in this set, and Jerry is riding along a carpet of great drumming.

Heading out for a road trip, seems appropriate.

A cool morning, and going to be a cooler day than yesterday. Looking forward to that.

Pulled a random disc off the shelves from my row of Blue Note 85th Anniversary discs from Universal Japan, and pulled out this one: the Wayne Shorter “Speak No Evil” SHM-SACD

On to

Grant Green “Goin’ West” Blue Note Japan 24 bit by RVG lp facsimile cd

I hate to say it but this disc sounds a lot better than the Shorter SHM-SACD

Ornette Coleman Sound Grammar
A nice way to get moving on this fine morning

Nice and cool this morning. . . going to be a nice day with in-laws from Austin and NYC.

Though I really celebrate his other birthday as I share it, I always play some Louis Armstrong on July 4. This one is one of the first of his that I owned (on LP) and sound so good on this edition.

“Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy” Columbia SACD

A document of a working band in a Chicago studio during a night off from the bandstand. (Plus a few really nicely remastered earlier 78 sides). Just love this music. . . have for many decades.

On to
Another great jazz trumpeter, Muggsy Spanier, in his release in Richard Parker’s Jazz Classics in Digital Stereo, “1931 and 1939”

(unneeded post)

Hope everyone had as good and safe a holiday as possible. I had a great one with in-laws from NYC and Austin. It was so good to be able to comfortably discuss things with like minds so openly.

Now playing “The Angel’s Share Working Man’s Dead 1970” SECOND half on cdr

Sound quality is surprisingly good. Some amazing vocal tracks.

I’m especially enjoying the takes of “Easy Wind.”

Now on to
Bill Evans “Further Ahead: Live in Finland (1964-1969)” Elemental Music 2 cd set, disc 2

After the raw beauty and stellar sound quality of “Easy Wind” on “The Angel’s Share” these trio tracks from Bill are a perfect follow up.
