Stumbled across this copy when thumbing through records late this morning. This being my original Joseph JarmanSong For on the Delmark label. Joseph is joined by AACM co-founder Fred Anderson on tenor sax, William Brimfield - trumpet, Christoper Gaddy - piano/marimba, Charles Clark - bass, Steve McCall - drums. Song For being a sign of where the Chicago avant-garde would tread in the coming years.
Some may recognize this CD reissue cover vice the original LP:
'Twas a hot night, the window unit was on all night. I got six hours in and now the unit is off and I’m going to listen for a while since it’s cool for a spell.
Starting off with another disc from the “Enjoying the Ride” sixtieth anniversary Grateful Dead box set, thie earliest one I’ve played yet, Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Uniondale, NY (3/16/73), disc 1
Dexter Gordon (ts & vo)
Tete Montoliu (p)
Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (b)
Alex Riel (dr)
Recorded at Jazzhus Montmarte 1964
Edit to add: this is one of the really good live Dexters of the period. Tete and Dexter both make some great quotes, and Bobby Timmons should be flattered. NHOP is so well-presented here and this trio makes a pocket that Dexter seems to enjoy sitting in. I find this is one of those few discs that sound better with the “Phase” in the “Out” position on my DAC.
John Tchicai’s Five PointsOne Long Minute, Venus kick’s off this 2008 Nu Bop Records CD. Ches Smith’s drumming is great on this as is bassist Dmitry Ischenko. Tchicai’s tenor work is good, but not as firey as on some of his earlier work, such as on Johnny Dyani’sWitchdoctor’s Son.
Woke up to see a deer in the side lot, which was nice. I love being so close to nature.

Adonis Rose Trio + One “For All We Know” Storyville cd
The “+ One” is the lovely Gabrielle Cavassa. This is certainly a nice and gentle way to begin another hot day. This could definitely be marketed as a Cavassa album. The trio supports her quite ably, and the recording is very balanced.
Continuing the “heartbeat jazz” pace with this album that I didn’t know existed until last week, and glad I found it. Ballads associated with Trane, sung supported only by piano and bass. Sweet.
“I Wish I Knew – Yvonne Walter Sings The Coltrane Ballads” Muzak Japan HQCD
Bo Carter, real name Armenter Chatmon, a Qobuz compilation of Bo’s Mississippi Delta Blues, Twist and Shake. Twist and Shake appears to be a VMA bootleg of the Yazoo compilation Twist it Babe 1931 -1940. Versus this set of solo performances, some may be more familiar with him as one the Mississippi Sheiks.
Regarding the weather, the front that passed through yesterday afternoon was quite extraordinary. While no hail or tornadoes we experienced winds in excess of 70 mph and total railfall of 5.2 inches. Power was out briefly, 4.5 hours mol. I had disconnected vital electronics in anticipation of the storm. Earlier yesterday morning I was raking and cleaning up pine needles, and had moved our new car from its normal parking spot; no garage here. During the storm many white pine limbs came down. Following the storm I assessed the damage and began picking up the limbs and placing them in the ever growing brush pile. I noticed one 8-10 foot 2 inch diameter branch had come down where the car had been parked leaving a 5 inch diameter 6 inch deep divot. I’ll count my self as fortunate as other than a minor inconvenience the storm brought no significant damage.
It’s a much more original recasting of the material. Walter is more of a Sheila Jordan type expressionist than Allyson is–in comparison Allyson’s seem safe. And the pianism in support of Walter here is equally expressive and about an equal partner in a way that there wasn’t one in the Allyson release imo.
Thanks I guess. I know enough to know what I like and what I don’t, and who I like and don’t like. And I know enough to know how little I or anyone ultimately can know!
Starting off a warm morning with a Canadian singer I have three discs of. . .she reminds me of Blossom Dearie more than a bit, that’s a good thing. She always has nice players supporting her.
Another still, quiet morning. Looking forward to the weekly breakfast with my brother- and sister-in-law. The food isn’t great, but the “visit” is.
Decided to continue revisiting Kirk–the man was a fascinating artist til the end. This is one of his final three, when he moved to Warner Bros. His tenor sound is beautiful on some of these tracks!
Rahsaan Roland Kirk “The Return Of The 5000 Lb. Man” 32 Jazz cd
Warm, stuffy. . .slept okay. Man the system sound great! A new tube is settling in nicely.
Starting off with the album that made me realize the mastery of Joel Ross and Immanuel Wilkins. Music that draws me in from the first vibraphone notes.
We’re getting used to sleeping with the window unit going. . .which is good as the nights have been warmer than last year at this time. It’s Saturday and the neighborhood is extra quiet! The system is shining–I changed a few settings on the DAC yesterday morning and they are settled in now and. the sound is glorious!
Another disc from “Enjoying the Ride,” the 60th Anniversary box set from the Grateful Dead.
Boston Music Hall, Boston, MA (9/15/72) disc 2. What had been a mellow show erupted into a wild “Playing in the Band!”
Rob Van Kreeveld “Together Alone” Baileo Music Productions cd
This is an interesting cd from a pianist from the Netherlands I discovered backing Yvonne Walter on her Coltrane Ballads cd. A great touch, and intriguing trio arrangements.
I thought it interesting that he has a sister release called “Alone Together”. . . I have that one on the way.
