First music of the day

First up this morning… Eric Hilton’s (Thievery Corporation) new release “Midnight Ragas”. This release slipped by me, but glad I found it. Listening on Qobuz and unfortunately it’s not hi-res, yet it sounds great. I’ll pick up the CD soon as well.

attended many concerts, rapped with band members (1970s)

That big M.F. sound is difficult to capture via recording. Never saw him live, as I was into a more esoteric approach to music. Bet he was a lot of fun live.

He was a hoot and the band was always superb.

showing my age, we did not do rap music, which came years later

I really like Maynard during the Roulette years. He had great players and arrangers such as Willie Maiden and Slide Hampton and Jaki Byard, and the fabulous drummer Frankie Dunlap. And Roulette really knew how to record and produce great big band records.

Other than these and a few albums now under the Verve umbrella I don’t really listen to MF.

A nice morning, and I slept well, which was welcome. Starting off with another Andrew Hill, “Compulsion” on Blue Note, a Japanese SHM-CD version, UCCQ-5118.

Very percussive, and some interesting playing by John Gilmore.

I haven’t listened to this music in many years. All I have on hand to compare it to is a 20 bit digipak US version, this certainly sounds improved.

You might have heard the praise for the sound quality of this album. IMO it’s not been overstated.
I have both the 33 and 45. The 45 doesn’t sound any better in my system.

It has always sounded good in any version I have heard — I have an OG LP, a French reissue (in a box set) and a French cd and an SACD.

The most recent album from Flora Purim. Reminds me of her album of Nascimento tunes, and also Monday Michiru work.

Yes, M.F. tended to surround himself with talent. I prefer his 1950’s Roulette recordings, M.F. 3 and M.F 4&5 (Live at JImmy’s). I can only imaging the energy of a Maynard Ferguson performance in a smaller venue. Certainly a hoot as you say.

Rickie Lee Jones The Evening of My Best Day. A local community radio station, WOVM 91.1 Lawrence University, played Rickie Lee Jones Second Chance from this album. Piqued my interest as I haven’t spun RLJ in some time. Nice and tasteful album with some fine pop ditties.

Agree, at one time I considered the Mosaic M.F. box, but passed as at the time other opportunities were more in line with my listening preferences.

My original release of Ellington Masterpieces is in NM- condition, and sounds great, however my Analog Productions 33 RPM Masterpieces is a welcome sonic improvement in it’s mono glory.

I have my Dad’s og. It’s not even close to the remaster imo.

As I said. The original is nice to have, but the Analog Production reissue slays it sonically.

I was concurring or agreeing witchoo.

I enjoy the differences on those I have. . . all sound really good when they are spinning.

I attended a number of MF performances in small clubs. Everything unamplified. Astounding energy and power.

I agree, the earlier performances are the best. But I still get a kick out of the later more pop inspired performances.

Cool again this morning. May head out for errands early to enjoy that before it gets too warm.
