I (think) I was at the Capital Center show on September 15, 1982…according to Wikipedia the entire show is not included in the box set, wondering if there were issues with the recordings.
Awesome! There are a number of incomplete shows in this box set, I haven’t really seen any reasons given in the literature, but I haven’t gone through all of that either.
A stuffy morning. . . .
Starting off with Grant Green “Feelin’ the Spirit” Blue Note Japan SHM-SACD. Wonderful music! Herbie Hancock shines.
And on to another very nice RVG recording.
Pepper Adams “Urban Dreams” Palo Alto cd
Baritone Saxophone – Pepper Adams
Bass – George Mraz
Drums – Billy Hart
Piano – Jimmy Rowles
Recorded September 30, 1981, at Van Gelder Recording Studios, Englewood Cliffs.
Mike Bloomfield’s contributions were spot on.
A most amazing album.
I consider this essential.
Surprised myself for even considering this a First Listen of the day, much less buying a copy. While in a local record store, Radio Chaos, I overheard several customers talking it up. Curiosity got the best of me so I picked up Black Sabbath Paranoid as well as Black Sabbath Black Sabbath. The hype was true, as both sound better than they have reason to with the Kevin Gray Cohearant remastering. That said it is safe to say I’ve outgrown Black Sabbath. Time for a little Herman Blount and his Astro Space Travellers.
Out of curiosity I will try it too.
Woke up in the cool stillness and enjoyed the sound of the birds and trees for a few minutes. I love living out here by the forest.
Yesterday I pulled Joe Farrell CTI discs from the shelves and am starting with “Joe Farrell Quartet” on CTI, King Jazz cd.
The great team of Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette anchor this one, and the fourth member is either Chick Corea (three tracks) or John McLaughlin (who appears on two tracks only). There are two duo tracks with Joe, one with Chick and one with Dave.
Now on to
Joe Farrell “Outback” CTI King Jazz cd
Another killer band.
Joe Farrell – tenor and soprano saxophone, flute, alto flute, piccolo
Chick Corea – electric piano
Elvin Jones – drums
Buster Williams – acoustic bass
Airto Moreira – percussion
I enjoy your posts on this First Music thread. Thanks for taking time to do it.
A deliciously cool morning! Slept well after a gathering of like minds with a purpose at Garfield Park in Mentor. A few hours in the fresh evening air was very nice.
Starting off with a more modern “Chicago Style” recording I pulled from the shelves. Nothing essential, but well-recorded fun music.
Red Balaban & The Eddie Condon All Stars “Memories Of Condon’s - Volume One” Jazzology cd
I bought this because “Bobby Gordon never disappoints.”
Bass – Red Balaban
Clarinet – Bobby Gordon
Cornet – Ed Polcer
Drums – Ernie Hackett
Piano – Jim Andrews
Trombone – Ed Hubble
Part one of the recording of all the music that bassist Red Balaban and the Eddie Condon All-Stars played at a 1978 Connecticut concert.
On to something quite different. . . .
I haven’t spun this SACD enough–been listening to the OG LP copy I have a few times since I got this and need to revisit it. Have to admit it sounds fantastic.
Santana “Borboletta” Sony SACD (listening to the stereo layer).
Perhaps my favorite Santana release.
