First music of the day

Starting off a cold morning with disc 2 of Yes “Tales from Topographic Oceans” Super Deluxe Edition. This is the original mix, LP sides. C and D.

Wow. This is remastered very well.

On to

“Songbook by Jason Palmer” Ayva cd

This was I believe Jason Palmer’s first release as a leader and it sounds very “mature.” Palmer deserves more attention. All his original compositions on this one, as well as excellent support from a few “names.”

Alto Saxophone – Greg Osby
Bass – Matt Brewer
Drums – Tommy Crane
Piano – Leo Genovese
Tenor Saxophone – Ravi Coltrane
Trumpet – Jason Palmer
Vibraphone – Warren Wolf

Recorded October 28-29, 2006
at Systems II Studios, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Cold But supposed to be warmer today. We’ll see.

Starting off the mornning with Hristo Vitchev Quintet, “The Perperikon Suite” First Orbit Sounds cd

The Bulgarian born San Francisco guitarist is supported by vibraphonist Christian Tamburr, pianist Weber Iago, bassist Dan Robbins and drummer Joe DeRose,

Wow, it will be 46 degrees today. A heat wave! And . . . no snow.

Watched seven deer walk across our back yard into our side yard and then across the road into the forest. They are active in the heat (29 degrees right now) and seemed happy, looking for food. I love my sylvan world.

Starting off a listening session with the second disc from the last music I listened to yesterday . . .

SFJazz Collective “Original Compositions and Works of Thelonious Monk” disc 2

Also, Been tweaking my LP playback a bit last night and this morning–different isolation feet on the phono preamp and adjusted the counterweight on the tone arm a bit. This LP sounds amazing today!

John Coltrane “Crescent” LImited Edition Impulse LP reissue

Well that was a brief bit of warmth, cold snap is here and the temperature will lower over the next few days. Sigh.

Starting off the morning with a different input tube in the SEWE300B and things are sounding very good. I listened again to the 10" Tal Farlow of the McGhee/Farlow disc I had finished up listening to yesterday, and now am listening to the third disc of “Classic V-Disc Big Band Jazz Sessions” Mosaic Records 10 disc set.

On to

George Russell “Ezz-thetics” Riverside/OJC cd

Been too long since I have spun a Russell cd!

Going to be warmer today. Had a hard time staying asleep so decided to get an early start and have some “me time” listening. There’s deer activity out there, fun to observe. The last time I was out and saw a few deer in the yard I told them (one was a buck warily observing me) that they were welcome here and would come to no harm, and coincidentally there have been more deer hanging around, even sleeping or resting on the ivy, and passing through since.

Listening to an ezz-thetics cd remake of the Impulse John Coltrane “One Down, One Up” 2 cd set, called “ong Of Praise New York 1965 Revisited” and I was told it sounds way better than the Impulse, and it does. I think this is an imortant musical document.

I’m on to Dayna Stephens “Gratitude” Contagious Music cd

Quite a band!

Baritone Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Electronic Wind Instrument, Synthesizer, Bass – Dayna Stephens
Bass – Larry Grenadier
Drums – Eric Harland
Guitar – Julian Lage
Piano – Brad Mehldau

After more than 3500 posts in this thread, I’m amazed at the number of people whose first music of the day is jazz, something that always seemed to me to be an evening or late-night pursuit. I applaud all the open minds and ears here. Hear, hear. Here.

Myself, early morning is generally my most concentrated listening period, my wife sleeps late and a floor away I listen. I don’t listen in the evening, I spend that generally with my wife either watching TV or not. . . early morning and day listening are my thing. And jazz is more than 90 percent of my listening, any time of the day.

Jazz is what I enjoy the most. I have about 700 jazz LPs, 50 rock or pop and about 50 classical.
And I buy new jazz albums at least a couple times per month. I’m gonna need a bigger boat.

It is predicted to be in the mid-forties today. Will feel like a. heat wave! I’ll be hard-pressed to keep my wife indoors.

Starting off the quiet this neighborhood has on Saturday and Sunday mornings with Melissa Aldana “Filin” Blue Note cd, just released yesterday. I really like her work and she has been touring overseas for months and is on the top of her game. This is very mellow, building slowly, and I remember from my old band days how difficult it was for me to manufacture and maintain such beauty, and I really admire that skill.
The album is dedicated to ballads, inspired and mostly following the Cuban style known as “filin.” The recording is excellently engineered.

Now. . . .

I’m on the spin of the last disc in my comparison of the new remaster and remix of Yes “Tales of Topographic Oceans” that I am spinning for a report for my best friend of my impressions. I really like both the new remaster, and Steven Wilson’s new remix. Two very good presentations of music I love. After this I can move on to the other cds in the box set, and the LPs!

This listen is to disc 1 of the set, the first two LP sides, newly remastered.

Another warmer night and a warmer day ahead. Lots of melting going on. . . I expect soon to hear the crashing sound of snow and ice sliding off the roof!

The eery quiet of a Sunday morning out here . . . the already low ambient sound lowered still. I really enjoy being up this early and spinning a disc. I’m starting off with a bunch of real pros, One4All, “The Long Haul” on Criss Cross.

Now

Pharoah Sanders “Love is Here” Transcendence cd, disc 1

Re-visiting this excellent 2 cd set from last year. Wow.

Just listen the reboot yesterday, so this morning!

I woke up a bit ago and couldn’t shut my brain off. The constant dripping of water from the roof (about ten inches of snow and ice melting consistently) just outside the window from my head didn’t help me slip back into slumber. . . so I decided to get up and listen. Never a waste of time or attention to listen to music, for me at least.

Started off with Earl "Father’ Hines “Reunion in Brussels” on Red Baron cd. What a force Hines was! An endless stream of swing with passion.

Now

Something quite different from Earl Hines, Valeria Oliveira “Imbalanca” Video Arts Japan cd

Another early morning that it was hard to fall back asleep and I just went with a bit of TV (“Dark Winds” is back) and now the system is on.

Decided to start the day off with some Bird. I have not listened to a lot of later Bird this decade and decided to put the final disc of this box set into the transport.

Charlie Parker “The Complete Verve Master Takes” disc 3

Fully formed and mature Bird, powerful tone and as fluid and fascinating as a world class figure skater. No wonder he commanded so much respect and was so influential.

That choir singing “Old Folks” always cracks me up. They get the vibe of the song and then Charlie just takes it somewhere else. I love Willard Robinson tunes.

Now on to

I chose this one when I heard the news of Jesse Jackson’s passing a bit ago. “Inner Spirit” seemed a good title for my assessment of his strength.

Bill Evans “Inner Spirit: The 1979 Concert At The Teatro General San Martin” Resonance 2 cd set, disc 1

Another warm morning! Keep them coming!

Just as I fell asleep last night a sheet of ice and snow broke free from the roof and crashed onto the deck with a huge wall of sound. If that had not happened early last month I would have been as worried and freaked out as I was then!

Staring the morning off with the next disc int his massive box set.

Yes “Tales from Topographic Oceans” Super Deluxe Edition. cd 5 of 12, the first cd of the instrumentl mixes. Fascinating to hear this music (remixed) without the vocals.

And now with my newest upgrade, the Decware Dynagrid Jr., seasoned and integrated into the system, it’s time to listen to this music that I have listened to in every system I’ve owned since I was a teen. It sounds wonderful!
