Don Cherry Inside/Outside

Recorded Live in Amsterdam, Netherlands, August 14, 1987

Don Cherry - trumpet
Carlos Ward - alto saxophone
David Murray - tenor saxophone, bass clarinet
Mark Helias - bass
Ed Blackwell - drums

It is uncommon to see a pocket trumpet played at a venue. It is a travel practice instrument. Fun.

I agree, always a fun surprise to see one magically appear. The last time I head one was a recent performance by Joe McPhee in Chicago.

Coincidently I was just offered a Jupiter 416 pocket trumpet at a great price by an estate of a trumpet player.

It is an interesting world.

The New John Handy Quintet “New View” Columbia / Koch cd

Talk online of Handy made me seek this one out from the shelves. What a band! Albert Stinson was taken from us too soon.

Alto Saxophone – John Handy
Bass – Albert Stinson
Drums – Doug Sides
Guitar – Pat Martino
Vibraphone – Bobby Hutcherson

I was interrupted shortly into this one, so I’m repeating it.

Dexter Gordon “Complete Trio and Quartet Studio Recordings 1974 1975 1976"” Steeplechase, disc 1

Al Tootie Heath!

OMG I forgot how awesome the two takes of “Old Folks,” duets by Gordon with NHOP, are on this disc. Just Dexter at his best and NHOP gives him everything he needs.

Hank Roberts Black Pastels, some exceptional 12 string acoustic guitar from Bill Frisell on this Winter & Winter release.

Starting the morning off with something diffferent that I haven’t heard for a while. This edition has a hi-res verson on DVD that sounds great, but my main system doesn’t play DVD (my other two systems do) so. . .here’s the excellent sounding cd version.

Shostakovich: Pavel Kogan, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra – Symphony No. 5 Opus 47

Chet Baker “Baby Breeze” Limelight/Verve cd.

This one again as I didn’t get to the alternate and additional tracks yesterday.

Some great Chet singing here–especially the two tracks just backed by Kenny Burrell. What Kenny could do. . .he was such a master.
