It may well be too early for this music, especially as the new SEWE300B amp has really bloomed lately and is sounding so atmospheric and this music is. . . eerie to say the least, full of resonant spacey effects. But it suits today well enough!
Sun Ra & His Intergalactic Solar Arkestra: Space Is The Place (Music From The Original Soundtrack) 2 cd set and also remastered DVD and Blu-ray of the film, now listening to CD 1
Roscoe Mitchell Orchestra and Space Trio at the Fault Zone Festival. An interesting 2023 Wide Hive Records release, about as far from the Art Ensemble of Chicago sound as Roscoe can get. Following his faculty position at Mills College. Full of dissonance and irregular rhythms. I especially like The Space Trio’sCard in 3D Colors with pianist Sarah Cahill, violinist Kate Stenberg, and Roscoe on reeds. Suggested to the more adventurous listener.
This one has a special place in my collection, that is each version of the piece Space is the Place. The recent Modern Harmonic reissues on CD and LP box set are both worth acquiring.
I get that as well, Thomas Bruckner is shall I say a bit of an acquired taste. Thomas is featured on the final track. Over all my CD is quite enjoyable.
Relistening to this one this morning. This one helped me last night ease out of troubled mind from watching news analysis. It’s quite a nice release with some interesting arrangements of Strayhorn material.
“The Teo Macero Edited Version” of “Miles Davis Complete Live at Plugged Nickel 1965” set, the second Japanese release, on gold cd. Man this set sounds good! Tomorrow my newly limited edition SACD set of the US remastered and remixed version should arrive from cdJapan. I’m looking forward to hearing that!
Always enjoyed my Mosaic LP box set of Plugged Nickel as well. Just received a haul in from DMG in NYC. With a couple of Ingrid Laubrock CDs among others. Supposed to rain here over the next few days so between those CDs and a new Matana Roberts 10 inch Coin Coin Five LP I’m set for the inclement weather.
The new SACD version of Miles Davis “Complete Live at Plugged Nickel” 8 cd box set from Japan, a Tower Records exclusive, arrived last night via DHL. I listened to disc 3 last night and am listening to disc 1.
Thelonious MonkLive in New York Vol. 1, recorded to reel-to-reel with a single microphone in 1958 at the Five Spot Cafe. The set features Charlie Rouse, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and Roy Haynes. Intro by Baroness Nica Koenigswarter. The sound is typical of a 1950s live set, with plenty of club ambience as well as the sound of this fabulous quartet. Also available as Thelonious Monk Live in New York, adding a 1963 Birdland date. Part of my recent DGM package.
I’m listening to disc 4 of the new Japanese SACD set of Miles Davis “Complete Live at Plugged Nickel” 8 disc set.

Keith Jarrett “Koln Concert” ECM Japan SHM-SACD UCGU-9059
Wow. It’s been some time since I played this music, and in fact I don’t think I ever played this SHM-SACD version before since buying it. This music was some of the rare music that I loved that I could share with my late first wife. . . she would listen for a while and most times fall asleep, peacefully and deeply. And I would finish up the cd the only one awake.
For a long time I was unable to play this because it brought me grief. That has passed now.
This is an album that I can almost play back fully in my head. It was the second Jarrett LP set I bought, first being “Bremen/Lausanne” which I got after discovering Jarrett on “Miles at Fillmore” and “Live/Evil.” What a DIFFERENT Jarrett was revealed on the solo albums.
I still have my LP version of this, I should play it again soon. And I kept a gold cd version from ECM Japan, and this one. . . wow. The sound. Detailed resonance and sustain, each note attack. . . lovely.
This is fantastic music in my opinion. One day it might be interesting to hear another master pianist interpret these pieces. There’s a timeless quality to it all.
