Yes I know. I think you very well could get what you pay for in some ways such as ultimate sound quality and warranted longevity.
So great to not have to be listening to headphones this morning.
Miles Davis “In Person, Friday Night At The Blackhawk, San Francisco Vol.1” Sony SICP-3963
Fantastic music. This and it’s Vol.2 companion will be issued on Blu-Spec CD2 for the first time in about 4 weeks.
Eerie morning weather here, still and foggy befitting for Suspended Music, Deep Listening Band & the Long String Instrument. The music of Pauline Oliveros and Ellen Fullman.
Julian Priester/Sam Rivers “Hints on Light and Shadow” Postcards cd
This one I spied on the shelf and have not played in quite some time. Not my usual fare, but making for an interesting listen this morning.
Followed by
Milt Jackson “Plenty, Plenty Soul” Atlantic cd
All star early stereo sessions. All but one are Jackson compositions. The ringer is by Cannonball.
Andrew Hill “Andrew!!!” Blue Note Japan SHM-CD UCCQ-5115
An intriguing 1964 release that rewards repeated spins.
Followed by
Another Andrew Hill from 1964, the classic “Point of Departure” Blue Note cd Japan UCCQ-9168
Have attended an improvisational performance featuring Zoh Amba and Chris Corsano last night at Chigago’s Hideout, I am following up with a listen to their February 2023 trio release The Flower School. Zoh seems to be an up and coming player on the scene. Zoh has the energy of an early Pharoah Sanders and the spirituality of Albert Ayler. A follow-up concert tonight at Constellation adding Bill Orcutt.
A bit of a late start on this snowy Halloween morning with the recent Tone Poet LP release of Herbie Nichols Trio. I’d consider this an essential item in any record collection, and a sonic step up compared to my Mosaic box set.
Joe Lovano Ensemble “Streams of Expression–featuring the Birth of the Cool Suite by Gunther Schuller” Blue Note cd
I listened to the ripped file this morning, then I took out this rare CD from the treasure box to play in PST.
Both sounded great so I listened to both from start to finish.
Breaking in new output tubes with challenging recorded material.
Love this music!
SACD edition, disc 4
A fine starter with David Murray Black Saint Quartet, Live in Berlin.
The Black Saint Quartet in addition to David features Lafayette Gilchrist, Jaribu Shahid, and Hamid Drake. A fine November 2007 performance.
Starting off with some Carmen. Her voice reminds me of that of “the one that got away.” I love her singing!
Carmen McRae “Song Time” Hindsight Records cd
Up early with Fiona the dachshund. Re-visiting this exciting recent reissue.
John Coltrane Eric Dolphy “Evenings at the Village Gate” Impulse SHM-SACD Japan
Bill Evans The Paris Concert edition two, on a UK import LP. A fine follow-up to the initial release, edition one. The trio features Marc Johnson and Joe LaBarbera. A fine set other than Joe’s drum solo on Nardis, which seems a bit out of place.
David Sanchez “Obsesion” Columbia cd
A lush sound filling that extra hour we fell back into.
Followed by:
The second disc of this release, Lewis on tenor with a string quartet, the Lutosławski Quartet–my favorite of the two discs. Challenging, emotional . . .lovely!
James Brandon Lewis “For Mahalia, with Love”
Greg Foat, Dolphin. I’ve been streaming this since it came out the summer. Really a good sounding album so I decided to buy it on CD. I was blown away! I wasn’t prepared for this. If ever there was an example for how much better CDs can sound compared to a good streaming setup for Qobuz this is it. This has to be the most subtly spectacular album in my collection.
