First music of the day

Still relevant today, only the names have changed. Some claim Gil Scott-Heron as the godfather of rap. I find his message to be more optimistic and hopeful than what most rap and hip-hop offers.

Not only some fine music from Tomasz Stanko, but I really dig the album cover art.

Earlier, December 1965, Tomasz Stanko and the Quintet The Music of Komeda Bad.

Duke Jordan Les Liaisons Dangereuses, a fine stereo bebop LP reissue on the BE! JAZZ label. Joining Duke Jordan are Charlie Rouse, Sonny Cohn, Art Taylor, and Eddie Kahn.

Re-listened to “The Genius of Coleman Hawkins” because it was still in the transport and . . . well it’s a great album.

Now, enjoying the cool and quiet of this lovely morning, I’m on to “Stan Levey Quintet,” Mode/Muzak Japan lp facsimile cd. These Muzak remasterings sound wonderful! And this is a really nice date.

Quite a band!

Piano – Lou Levy
Bass – Monty Budwig
Drums – Stan Levey
Tenor Saxophone – Richie Kamuca
Trumpet – Conte Candoli

Now onto a new arrival, the new remaster reissue of Sun Ra “Strange Strings” . . . a bizarre even by Ra standards recording. If it weren’t for the anchor of the amazing Ronnie Boykins bass playing . . . i probably would not listen to this. The original cd issue has been in deep storage a long time so I can’t do a comparison but the sound of this mastering is excellent.

On occasion I get an urge to listen to Maag Zelma, either the version from Art Ensemble of Chicago’s Full Force, or Kahil El’Zabar’s trio version on The Ritual with Lester Bowie and Malachi Favors.

Deliciously cool out this morning. Walking the old dog is getting harder. . .she doesn’t like the dark as much now and she is not as interested in walking.

Sat down and decided to spin this one again. Just because.

Stirring things up a bit on this dreary soggy morning with Peter Brotzmann a 1973 recording reissued os an LP in 2015 on Cien Fuegos. An energetic trio with Peter, Fred Van Hove, and Han Bennink.

A sad morning. I’m starting to slowly lose my listening partner, Fiona the miniature dachshund. She’s nearly blind, nearly deaf, and fading. She’s been my good companion for years and I hate seeing her this way. I’m taking good care of her.

Right now we’re listening to

A sudden urge for the need to hear Ginza. The Cal Tjader/Stan Getz Sextet is a most fun listen!

I think Whit Dickey has stopped recording/performing. I haven’t seen anything new from him in a while. Hope he is ok.

Nice set with Bill Frisell, Joey Baron and Charlie Haden.

Hopefully he is doing well. I have not heard anything to the contrary.

I’m really enjoying the Dave Burrell set, new to me, thanks for the post.

The version I’m listening to on Quboz appears to be from the Black Lion cd reissue…your cd is part of the Muzak ‘Freedom Paper Sleeve’ reissue series.

Do you have any others in this series? There are several cds in this series that I’m tempted to buy (Dewey Redman ‘Look for the Black Star’ and Stanley Cowell ‘Brilliant Circles’).

The two you mentioned above are excellent, having them on vinyl. Can’t speak to the CD versions.

Good to know, thank you, are they the Arista/Freedom versions?

The Qobuz Black Lion Dave Burrell set that I’m listening to is a needle drop. Maybe Lon can confirm if the Muzak reissue is too.

I have also the Tchicai, the Taylor, the Marion Brown, the Redman, the Curson and a 2 cd sampler. All are good sessions, all are in fantastic sound–Muzak remastering has the best sound of Storyville, Mode, Black Lion, American Clave, Skye and Freedom of any cd or LP versions I have heard. Dusty Groove has a number of their reissues on sale for 8.99 at present.

And the Burrell does not sound like a needle drop to me.
