First music of the day

A more mellow Archie

Grateful Dead "Friend of the Devils, April 1978 Fourth show, disc 2

SEVENTEEN years ago today we lost my first wife, Helen Elizabeth Haggerty, who was a brilliant and loyal and kind and compassionate woman. Thinking of her today, as I do every day.

She would have loved the sylvan life I have now, and this cool autumn morning.

She learned to like the Grateful Dead over time, I played them enough and they grew on her. This box set startles me with its excellent sound.

Another cool morning and it will stay that way today. Nice!

Starting off with a very interesting cd that draws me right in.

On to an LP. . . .

Wini Brown With Milt Jackson “Miss Brown For You” Savoy Jazz LP

This lp includes National Records material including previously unreleased material by a singer from the Lionel Hampton band with excellent backing. LP sounds a tiny bit off-center.

A listen to Patricia Brennan is always a pleasure.

I continue to have reluctance to listen to the Sun Ra Transparency releases as sonically they can be a bit rough. This one is all over the map, but I had an urge to hear a more recent rendition of Lights on a Satellite. My urge was prompted largely due to the announcement of an upcoming Sun Ra release for RSD Black Friday, a double LP Lights on a Satellite: Live at the Left Bank. The title track available on YouTube shows promise[.]

Freddie Hubbard “Blue Spirits” Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary UHQCD

Fiona the dachshund let me sleep until 6:30. Wow, this is strange. A cool morning and the world out there is very still.

Yesterday I played with two different rectifiers in my SEWE300B and popped in another this morning. With the transparent nature of this amp the sound result from just a different rectifier is surprising!

I guess I shouldn’t say “surprised” above. . . because nothing like that surprises me really with this amazing amplifier. Just seemed very distinctive these instances. (And not surprisingly I’m all the way back to where I started with a Psvane Treasure 274B-Z – there is just a slightly wet richness to the presentation this rectifier brings that I crave!)

Right now. . . really enjoying the “Black Jazz” label sound here. . . fits my mood this morning.

Roland Haynes “2nd Wave” Black Jazz cd

Drums – Carl Burnett
Keyboards – Kirk Lightsey
Keyboards, Written-By, Arranged By – Roland Haynes

This is making me want to play “Bitches Brew”. . . .

One quick listen before heading out to the dentist and then Kyomi.

A cool and clear morning. Fiona the dachshund is clingy this morning so. . . lap dog and laptop are a bit unwieldy but I’m coping.

Listening again to this great sounding Metronome cd

Lars Gullin “Fäbodjazz” Metronome cd

Great compilation cd of Lars Gullin leader and sideman appearances 1951 to 1956.

Wrapping up initial listening to this excellent box set. The music, and the documentary, worth the long wait.

This music has long been among my favorite Hendrix.

Finishing up the fourth disc of the Bob Dylan “1974 Live” box set. This is going to be a slog to get through, this box set. I like the music okay. . . but his singing style this tour bugs me a bit.

Now on to Grateful Dead “Friend of the Devils: April 1978” box set, sixth show, disc 1

Contrary to the Dylan I’m really enjoying this box set, I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed 1978 Dead this much before, in part because of the excellent sound.

Just a gentle whispy rain this morning. I’ve gotten used to the chill in the air, but Lucinda put the heat on and I’m not complaining!

Starting off with an excellent compilation cd of two 1972 Stitt powerhouse recordings with Barry Harris at the piano.
