I hope you get a chance to hear them. The FR20’s are truly wonderful. I purchased them because of the clean and open midrange and tweeter, and was pleasantly surprised to find the bass was also much cleaner than my last speakers. And when set up just right, they have tons of magic. Female vocals that bloom sound nice. Vocals that are clean sound nice. They image very nice too.
agree the FR20’s are magical…and even more so with dual subs…mine keep improving too, even after a few months…
Absolutely, I had the chance to compare the FR20 and FR30 at home. Despite careful listening, the audible difference was minimal, aligning with Paul’s observations. Factors like room acoustics and personal preference play a role. Consider your budget and priorities when deciding between the two.
Welcome, @Sean2 !
Great first post
Would a closer to 10W SET be viable for FR speakers?
I’d guess so, especially since a linear impedance curve has been touted for these speakers.
Lately I’ve delved into the benefits of highly efficient/sensitive speakers and dynamic compression and the very real thing that 89dB speakers convert a surprisingly small fraction of the signal into acoustical energy is strongly in my mind, but then comes the FR speakers where every last bit of piquant knowledge has been meticulously applied… They are for sure so much better than most of all existing highly efficient speakers on the market in so many ways of construction that I kind of trust we can forget most downfalls concerning average efficiency speakers…
Let your ears and heart be your guide.
Ooooh, if I was a rich man.
It is probable that I won’t ever be purchasing a commercial speaker in that price range, my DIY ambition is too strong. But of course I am always interested.
Then again if I was a rich man, I’d maybe try an FR speaker with wholly swapped crossover components and Iconoclast internal wiring.
@jll37. You appear to have a very similar setup as mine, or what mine will be soon once FR10s go on sale ;). Namely, PSA DAC, Pass amp, and PSA speakers. You went with the XP22 Pre which I considered but decided on PSA PW pre. I have the X250.8 amp though, not pure class A. I’m super psyched to place my FR10 order…
My previous amp was the X250.8, great amp and I’m thinking you are gonna be very very happy with your new system…Congrats !!!
I just saw Paul’s video on YouTube about midrange drivers.
In the video it looks visually as if the FR 20 has a larger planar midrange driver than the FR 30. Did I just miss it or is that how it is ?
I believe it’s the same one in the smaller box, hence the illusion.
I concur with Baldy! My understanding is all the drivers are the same, just fewer of them in the FR20.
The woofers are slightly different. The internal guts of the woofer might be the same, but the visible cones are slightly different.
Now that you mention it, I do recall Chris saying the cone material was different due to the smaller internal volume (or some such thing). I really should refrain from making public statements based on memory … my “hard drive” is experiencing read/write errors …
or it has been hacked
Not hacked, getting old …
In case it wasn’t understood, I was referring to my aging brain …
Yup… Aluminum cones are used on the FR30s. The FR20s use a composite design with carbon-fiber skins enclosing a Rohacell foam core for lower mass. The spider of the FR20s are apparently also slightly softer than that of the FR30s.
