Looks like my FR5s arrive this week!! Due to room set up I cant pull these out from the rear wall much more than maybe 6 inches at most. Anything I should do to minimize the impact on the sound? Will he running with a strata.
Welcome!
Can you pull them away from the wall for listening and put them back, out of the way when you’re done?
Well, each wall reinforces the respone below about 400 hz by about 2 dB. There is also a complex boundary interaction from the half wavelengths to each wall etc causing some cancellations. Then, below 200 hz or so you have room mode interactions.
In general, experiment with placement where male voices sound natural and not too chesty. You may want to pull them in from the sidewalls a bit if they are close to the front wall. How wide is the room/area where they will be installed?
Thank you Matthew and Chris! My original plan was to pull them out when needed so I ordered stands with them. However the wife would prefer that I place them on a credendza type piece of furniture so I have less flexibility in pulling them out. I was not sure if some sound absorbing material behind the speakers would help or hurt the situations.
My current placement would be in sort of an alcove that is about 7ft wide and 2 ft deep where the credenza is but the overal room is larger. Based on the comment from Chris this may be the worst place we could have chosen lol. Would any back wall treatment help this or should I think about another location? I will experiment a bit as you noted Chris and see how they sound with different placement.
Yes, that’s not great. You may not get that much boundary loading, since it’s only 2 ft deep but it can still cause issues with early reflections. Treatment on the side walls will help the comb filtering artifacts from the sidewall reflection but the low midrange may sound overblown and you’ll lose a sense of depth and width as compared to other areas where you can get out from the sidewalls 3+ ft.
Still, we do the best with what we have.
What are you using as a source?
Chris, first of all thank you so much for taking the time to discuss this. I feel like I am quite literally putting your baby in the corner. I will try to find a better placement, as you mention we do the best with what we have!
I mostly listen to vinyl so my source is a Fluance turntable with a Stellar Strata for my amp.
Yes, with an analog rig, you wouldn’t want to use DSP EQ etc (which is one of the tools you have to mitigate some of the bass issues with non-ideal placement). Of course, this EQ doesn’t improve the other acoustic issues (lack of depth and specificity of stereo imaging from very early reflections).
You might take a bunch of pictures of your room in a 360 and send them to our audio consultants here and see if we can give you more feedback.
