It’s a very easy switch but don’t expect miracles. The fuse that comes with it isn’t bad. And beware of all the hyperbole that people love to use.
Right. I’m not expecting an absolute sonic miracle here…just some final steps in my best effort.
I’ve read so much about folks have trouble opening up the Senior to get to the fuse. If you were to start over, knowing what you know now, I sure would appreciate those helpful insights. TIA!
Looking at it, I’m guessing the screws in the back and potentially something ont the bottom. I live down the street from PSA, so might go knocking on their door.
This thread should be of help: click
Thanks for that, Elk! Much appreciated.
I have so many tweaks to my DSS that the red fuse had a detrimental effect. It was just too much of a good thing. I just got a good industrial ceramic fuse. It is probably slightly better than the stock one but much more neutral. That is just my situation. For most people it should make a profound difference. I have 9 different tweaks applied to the DSS already. That is just counting outboard. Except the inside is covered with ERS cloth and damped with Dynamat Xtreme on the inside of the top cover. I also replaced the electrolytics with Panasonic throughout and all resistors with Vishay of same spec. I replaced the transformer with one of a similar footprint but I found one with better specs. So you can see the issue with the fuse. The upgrades I have made have made it a completely different class of DAC regardless of the fuse.
With all you DS Dac mods, how does it compare to your MSB?
(regardless of fuse)
Obviously the MSB is still better. The DSS is never going to match the MSB. I do feel it beats the Rossini now though. Which is pretty amazing. It easily beats DAVE. The MSB it is just not going to happen. I wish I could pull it off but it seems it is just not possible. If you replace everything better quality the same specs it will sound a good bit better but there is still a limit. Ted choose pretty good components to begin with but it was built to a price. He did not use Panasonic ESR and Vishay.
I found a little very old Jensen with the same specs. The clock is really the same, I just think it is a better part. It is from TI. It has to be the same exact MHZ. The silver wire and jacks are probably the biggest upgrade. Furutech. I just did this so I have not mentioned it before. I kind of prayed it booted. It did make a marked difference in sonics. Actually I did not do this myself. I couldn’t. My friend who is an Engineer did it and I watched. I am nearly blind. I am trying to be more honest.
The red fuse we agreed did not jive though. I am sure that it does in a stock unit.
You should have seen me picking out transformers like an idiot until I hit pay dirt. At least he is patient.
Awesome.
Thanks for taking the time to reply Sir, very informative!
In case you come around something that opens up the DS say above 5 or 8kHz, let me know please. I still use Bridge II, which could also be a limiting factor. Fuses are already on high level.
Transformers delivered from Don Audio to UK in 6 days after ordering.
Well done the Guys in Germany.
Swapping out stock fuse in the DS for better as well, have a question on that if I can ask.
Thanks.
Few guys here have tried different fuses in the DS?
Is the SR Orange FAR better and a big step up over the Hifi Tuning Supreme 3 in this application?
Asking as the orange is 4 times the price here in the UK!
Have SR blues n blacks elsewhere in my system and know the benefit of aftermarket fuses.Tempted to throw money at the Orange, stick a fork in it and call it done.
But for the same cost I could improve other fuses in my system, know what I mean?
Want to max out the performance of my DS, but if a Hifi Tuning Supreme 3 fuse isn’t a million miles behind, or even just a different ‘flavour’, could make a wider system improvement for same cost.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Hi,
Still awaiting my transformers from Don Audio.
Paid for them on 10th July to be sent to U.K.
They don’t seem to answer emails either. Should I be worried?
FWIW, in today’s world of the unpredictable supply chain interruptions, I don’t worry about an order for 30 days.
Keeps me sane and manages my expectations…
Fortunately, published back orders aside, my purchases have rarely taken more than a month to be fulfilled.
I believe this too shall pass.
Cheers.
I wouldn’t be personally.
I was lucky I guess I got the last two from their previous stock, and think the Website said restocking…after that…was mid July I think?
With Brexit and all that nonsense I had resigned myself to waiting 6 months, so 6 days was a bit of a surprise!
They came through for me, sure its not a worry.
Cheers. Put my mind at rest.
Has anyone else seen these new over the top fuse prices from a company called… Quantum Science Audio?
Prices range from $28.50 to $2,844.00 per fuse!
Not a typo…
They have a nice 30 days money back guarantee. Also if you accidentally blow one, they will replace it one time for free. Just don’t blow it two times. You can’t go wrong with that kind of guarantee.
No doubt…
Hello, did anyone tested a Synergistic Purple fuse in the DS ?
Yup.
Replaced an SR Orange with a Purple in my DS.
Swapped it out a couple of weeks ago, feel its getting into its stride now.
Significant improvement over the Orange,
in terms of the mid and top end projecting better, and sounding more open, transparent and (to me) most importantly tonally realistic.
Can tell the difference in the the type of drum being played, how hard its being hit, all that good stuff.
Guitars feel a lot more “in the room” and correct sounding.
Lots of air around the strings, that kind of thing.
Never had this with the Orange, more realism, more relaxed yet more detailed, and soundstage width, and in particular depth much improved.
The Purple fuse lets the DS dac show what it’s capable of.
Highly recommended!
Have another coming tomorrow coming for my BHK Pre, again replacing an Orange.
Hoping for similar improvement with my Pre.
