Help with a DAC recommendation

I just bought the AirLens and connecting to Denefrips Pontus II 12th. The detail is beyond words but it’s thin. Bass and Mids lack depth and muscle. What PS Audio Dac would compliment the AirLens. Can’t afford Steller Gold……

See what the experts have to say but my thoughts are look for a PSA Jr. Great dac, for not much.

PSA has a sale on refurbished DS MK1 on going now. That is an excellent deal!

The airlens sound improves considerably with about 200 hours of use.

How long have you been playing it so far?

Before jumping the gun for another new piece of equipment, give it time to break in. I
recommend that you stream a pink noise file on repeat through it 24x7 for about a week and see if you like it any better after that.

Congratulations on your purchase, and best of luck with it.

Agree, you are jumping the gun. Wait it out and see what happens as there are plenty of new DACs to consider if it comes to that, especially ones that are not discontinued.

I don’t have an AirLens, but I do have a Pontus II. The last thing i’d describe it as would be thin.

You don’t say what your other gear is, or what your streamer was before, and if that sounded full or thin, or if the AirLens is the only moving part in this, etc…

However, if you’re curious about the DAC, there are firmware updates you can do for the Pontus… make sure you contact them first before doing anything!

100% of the products in this hobby are discontinued.

Value vs performance alinged with budget.

You’re right at some point they all are though some stay in production for long periods of time. However the DS Jr. was discontinued several years ago in part because the parts for continued production didn’t exist. There are plenty of current products or ones with parts availability that will fit in most any budget. He didn’t give a budget plus as he stated the Air Lens is brand new so no need to do anything as of yet.

Thanks for that…

I had a pre-owned Jr for about 2 years and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately it developed a buzzing sound and the folks in the service dept couldn’t promise it was fixable because of the lack of parts. I’d get another one if PSA wasn’t offering refurbed DSD Mk1 units at $1600 right now. In fact, I just ordered one to replace the Jr.

Makes sense. I saw a thread were that buzz was eliminated by a full reset. You probably tried that I aassume. I noted that just in case though… Hopefully i get a few years too.

But at 1600 for the MkI, that sounds like the way to go. Not sure what you could buy any better at that price.

Yeah, unfortunately the reset only silenced the buzz one time. After that it seemed to be permanent (as well as louder).
