High End Espresso Machine Buying Guide & Remarks Regarding Roon, Harman & Samsung

Thing is, I can do convolution in MinimServer, which I’ve been using for years. The cost, comparatively, is cheap. Between MinimServer, LMS, and Qobuz, does the feature set offered by Roon really make it worth it? That’s what’s always held me back.

Love the change to the thread title.

I’m a Yeti man and since they put out the tiny mugs with a ceramic lining, I’m even more committed. I generally use a large Zojirushi mug as a thermos to transport Aeropress coffee to work because the watee on base is undrinkable. It’s perfect but for the flip open top-I can’t have something in my face.

Since this is a now a catchall thread, what ever happened to @badbeef? I haven’t seen him on in ages. Just curious.

Maybe we all should move to Colorado.

Always good news.

This reminds me of the old days, living in a student condo, after returning from Sudan with unroasted green Kenian coffee beans. Having just made a fresh traditional home roast, I found myself in a quarel with a room mate, who was having his karate suit hung out to dry around the corner. And he was a tea afficionado…
It suffices to say, the smell of freshly roasted coffee was gorgeous! Like being around in an afternoon east African town.

The Iperespresso capsules in my opinion are much better then Nespresso. If I was going to get a pod machine it would be between illy and Lavazza. The Lavazza have more coffee in the capsules. Both companies machines does a bit of preinfusion which really helps with the fullness of the shot. Of course there’s less selection with “flavors” but, I’d rather have something that tastes good vs the marketing of 40 flavors that Nespresso represents.

James Hoffmann is popular here too. I have watched quite a few of his vids. He’s a very good presenter.

Agreed. I’m not a coffee freak per se but he did help me find a nice drip coffee maker and grinder. Espresso is not an avenue that my vehicle will ever go down if at all possible.

I dutifully use James’s ‘hack’ of dipping the handle of a spoon in water to stir into the beans just before grinding. Static dust gone.

Simple pour over and AeroPress decaf-mostly user here. A really good hand grinder really makes the coffee for me, along with trace minerals added back to RO water.

Quite agree, including the audiophile analogy

What comes out of the speakers is just modified mains signal. What comes out of the coffee is 98% water, and brewing with less that a TDS of 80 can produce strange results.

I used to use Volvic as ph neutral and contains the least dry residue at 180°C, but over here we can get reliable local water mineral composition values, and for the last couple of years have been happy with a Kickstarter product from a couple of guys I funded (UK but global resellers including Prima in US)

As a rough guide if your tapwater is itself between 50 and 125 TDS, you can just use it straight really. If it’s less than that, give it a splash of San Pellegrino, buy the Cirqua additives, or do some of your own research.

P.S. Should I be worried about myself?

I’m too fussy about mineral composition between Ca++, Mg++ as well as pH :weary:

Nice looking coffee station you have there. I saved on my distribution with the use of some needles and a genuine balsamico cork sourced in Modena (I have filed for a patent on this design. so please don’t ask…)

Mmm, couldn’t quite make out the prices on the board there  Maybe they’re not actually displayed “if you have to ask etc.” Knew someone who worked in KJ West One in the '80’s who said anywhere on that street was like being paved with gold. There is a Jay’s Audio visit shown in yesterday’s YT video which I won’t directly comment on:

You have a point about my cork choice though. Amongst the few wine bottles remaining I have which still use cork are Vinho Verde, although I’m told cork is passé. We spent a fascinating while driving through Portugal back in the '90’s and spent a lot of it looking at cork oaks. I note the Amorim dynasty which nearly sank a decade or so later is back with a vengeance and traded on Euronext Lisbon!

Helpful sites for newbies:

Probably a bad time to say it, but I like Instant coffee (Kenco, usually). Decaf (because I cannot have any caffeine at all), weak, with milk, and hot water from a kettle.

Having said that, I was “brought up” on Co-op cheapo instant “chicory and coffee”. Now that really is utterly vile.
