Or “Roon now requires less coffee to keep calm after Harman acquisition”
We’re far down the roasting rabbit hole, buying our beans green, creating our own blends and roasting them in the garage. Total control freak here.
I wonder what the audiophile equivalent of that is?
The sky is really falling. No kidding. ![]()
Thank you, my friend, and
We are in agreement. ![]()
You’re totally beyond redemption. I’be given a thought to going on a 1-day course at Prufrock or Bella Barista, never got around to it. And I don’t have a garage.
This thread is getting silly. I just had a great cup of coffee from the new Nespresso machine which costed me 1/20 of an average cable that I owned. This is an audio related forum remember?
One touch did it and I’m totally satisfied. Now I’m ready for a cold morning walk:man_running:t3:then I may have another one-touch cup of coffee before turning on the system. I save at least a Stealth cable per year on coffee, and knowing that makes my coffee even tastier ![]()
This Harman-Roon deal got me thinking…
what’s everyone’s feeling on coffee mugs?
for me the inside needs to be light colored, or I won’t be able to tell how strong the coffee is. Hell, if the inside of the cup is black, a cup of hot water looks the same as coffee. Hate that.
And the lip can’t be too thick. Some old-school coffee shops and diners have these crazy thick-walled cups that they think are charming but I feel like I’m drinking out of something from an episode of the flintstones.
Okay, I’ll try and get us back OT. My Rose RS130 finally got Roon certified, meaning I finally have something that is Roon capable that makes me consider wanting to join the Roon community. I’m thinking the timing is just not great for jumping in, partly because of the high lifetime cost (I’m trying very hard to stay away from any more subscription type models) - yeah I should have joined when the lifetime cost was less than $500, but I’m always a day late with this stuff. Partly because dropping such a large chunk of change right now might not be… the smartest move. OTOH Roon seems to have all the features I’m looking for, so maybe it’s a “do it and don’t worry about the future” type thing. I don’t know. If Audirvana could do convolution over its UPnP interface, I’d try that. But it can do that only over USB. That’s something I’d really like to try, but except for Roon and MinimServer, I’m not aware of any other music server SW that can do convolution over Ethernet.
Tony the way I look at it is the total investment in the system and does the $1500 for roon sub and costs of hardware really that bad? Honestly all of us have spent 10’s of thousands on hardware and wires, and waffle over the part that makes finding the music to play on the system a big deal? I get if your system has something else that has its own like Innuos etc… Plus the SQ question on some systems seems to be in play (on mine I do not see roon having SQ issues). The money question to me for some of the costs we spend on other pieces of the system seems small potatoes to me.
Nothing comes close to Roon functionality. If that is what you like, the cost is super small in comparison to the rest of the system.
Very valid point! The manual that accompanied my Rocket included the following as key elements to a great espresso:
The 4 “M’s” of Espresso
Macchina
Miscela
Macinatura
Mano
Which, to my understanding, roughly translates to a.) the quality of the machine, b.) the proper bean/blend c.) the proper grind, and d.) the skill of the barista. Sort of like our audio hobby where “it all matters”: source material, physical equipment, listener acumen, etc.
I’d like to get a plaque of the “4 M’s” for display over my coffee bar if I can find one (or perhaps commission some Etsy artisan to make one for me).
I’d also like to take the opportunity to plug Espresso Coffee Shop in Padova, Italy. Their prices are very competitive, customer service is first rate (they speak excellent English), and made the process of my purchase of a Rocket R Nine One. Espresso machine from an international source as painless as I could have hoped.
I saw that about the hifi rose 130. I’m happy for everyone. The 130 looks so awesome and reviews I’ve read are great. My opinion on Roon is do it. I was reluctant but am a convert. I’m on my 3rd renewal. Pay by the year and only renew if it’s worth it to you. Compared to a $5K streamer, it’s a screaming deal.
It tasted like really good beans at first, then the aftertaste hits, which tells you where it came from(rear end of an animal). I’m personally fine with that, but YMMV.
Great! Let me add to the sauce another element: water! I know I know… it seems too much! But in audiophile world it is like quality of the current used in a system!
Is there an Italian synonym for water that starts with the letter M? ![]()
For those wanting to stay on-topic, I offer: Roon is a wonderful service. I hold a lifetime subscription. I hope Harmon doesn’t screw it up. I’d like to see them focus on beefing up their customer support (strictly forum support is insufficient for many).
When I was living in Philly in the '80’s, I had a housemate from Firenze who brought this back as a Christmas gift along with a bottle of Nonino Grappa. Needles to say I appreciated them. I still use it to this day.
I jumped on the lifetime deal shortly after they raised the price the first time. I have not regretted a day since. I see this more as a digital transport rather than a piece of software. Built-in DSP and PEQ are the best I’ve seen and is worth the price of admission. If you are an Audeze headphone user, it sweetens the deal even further. Their music discovery tools are vastly superior to anything I’ve seen. I tried to use Auralic Lightning DS in lieu of Roon, but didn’t last very long.
These are really good at keeping coffee fresh and hot for a long time. And they are light colored on the inside.
Get the Roon lifetime sub and skip the next gear tweak to cover costs.
Even at the current cost it’s a done in one, set it and forget move.
I cant think of a better piece of software that can keep your music in order, play what you want, find new stuff, and make you happy.
Yeah the DSP function is crazy good. I made convolution filter that works awesome in fixing some room anomalies. Not a fix all, but boy does it make it sound better. All done in digital for DSD and PCM.
